Does SSE still have the 4 GB VRAM limit on Windows 10?
I've looked all over but can't seem to find an a clear answer to this.

The old Skyrim could only exceed 4 GB of VRAM in Windows 7 because it used directx 9, right? And as far as I can tell, SSE uses directx 11...so it can utilize greater than 4 GB of VRAM. Correct?

Then there would be no reason to play it on Windows 7 as far as I can tell. I was going to make dual boot Windows 10-Windows 7 system for that very purpose, for a heavily modded Oldrim. So if there's no need for that anymore, I'll just do everything on my Win 10 OS.

Thanks for clarification! For some reason I haven't found a clear answer to this anywhere...is it just that obvious, maybe? I appreciate any help :)

It has nothing to do with DX version, and there is a very clear as long as you know what you're supposed to be looking for.
Old Skyrim: 32 bit program, thus limited to 32 bit (4 gigabyte) memory addressing.
New Skyrim: 64 bit program, thus "limited" to 64 bit (16 million terabyte) memory addressing.

So no, it doesn't have the limit.

Well, actually, it can use more than 4GB VRAM. The bug in W10 caused DirectX9 games to be unable to use more than that, but they could in Windows 7 and older. It is now fixed in the upcoming October Creator's Update for Windows 10, and was never there in the SE.

No it can't. 32bit is literally maxed at 4gb RAM or VRAM and cannot exceed that at all.

either way this game isnt affected by the 32-bit limit as its been updated for 64-bit architechture. im encountering fewer memory related crashes and can assume its got more than 3.75GB to work with now.

Yep this game is 64-bit and can use up to 16 exabytes of memory technically. So it shouldn't have any memory issues unless your PC doesn't have enough.

lol only 16GB here xD. still though, the 32-bit version would crash on fast travel more time than i could count due to memory problems. WITHOUT MODS!

now i mod pretty heavily again for visuals and such, real memory heavy stuff and have 0 issues.

This answers my question, thank you! I knew it was something about DX9, that unless I was using Windows 7 64-bit I couldn't get more than 4 gb of VRAM. I'm glad this is fixed! Thanks guys.
