Getting it for free and seeing that guaranteed I'll never buy a mod from their trash store.
Unless you like having to eat every 5 minutes (or less) and have an extremely vague UI on how you're doing.
And yes, they are mods that are handled like microtransactions.
If you're eating that much, you need to eat better food, i craft items that feed me 2-380, and 2-3 of those satisfy me for a long time. To really decide between each (if survival was ♥♥♥♥♥♥ free), is do you like/use "cold and wet", because currently it will lock up survival mode.
Also, food is not balanced well in SM.
I personally will wait for the in-development project Last Seed by Chesko.
It isn't hard to revert SE to 1.4.3 even then it isn't necessary. I have 0 issues with Frostfall on 1.5.3 along with SKSE64. It isn't hard to get Frostfall working with the latest update and SKSE64. I have all of Frostfall's features working along with exposure meters

I wish people would get over the 'paid mods' hate train though, this isnt exactly what that is, its a long term program to hopefully inspire future games to have continual DLC content for their games, right now its just mods on the store (you can tell they are temporary and quick creations, i get what their marketing director was going for but i think it would ahve been better to wait for actual DLC content to be put on it, rather than settle for what it is now), but i can see in the future there being fully fledged DLC's for those modders that want to get paid for creating that kind of content.
Also to clarify, Frostfall is available for SKE64, that version is even available on the bethesda.net in-game mod browser. Along with iNeed, Wet and Cold etc.
Survival mode is average, I would reccomend playing with it, just to change things up, but you should probably grab namira's ring pretty quick. You'll want to be eating people so that you don't go hungry often in half the dungeons. Also, eating people as werewolf counts, probably vampire feeding too, but I can't stand the ugly eyes, and I am too lazy to mod and fix it manually with TCO.
Currently Frostfall and Campfire are somewhat incompatible with SKSE64 and most likely will not be updated to fix the issues since the mod author (Chesko) has been MIA for months now. People have been assuming he went MIA to work on Creation Club content and rumors have spread suggesting he is behind Survival Mode.
Survival Mode does do more than Frostfall and Frostfall does things that Survival does. You can completely emulate Survival with Free Mods (and do more than what Survival offers) but you would need about 4 or 5 mods to completely emulate it (Mostly because some mods require more mods).
