I assume this is right after he died? You can't search him ever. If you wanted his robes finish the quest-line or get the spare set from his room.

Is that true? Well the title spoiled you anyway, you cannot search living people. I would spoiler tag normally but the game is 6 years old at this point.

That's normal, after you talk to Tolfdir who should be nearby you have to go into town to deal with some small orbs called Magic Anomalies, around 7 of town or so, other mages will help. After the orbs are gone you can head back to Mirabelle to continue the questline.

I think when you try leaving the college on foot someone will point you to the problem with the magic anomalies.
