Is turning Azura's Star into Black Star considered "bad"?
I mean, from a role-playing persepctive. If my character is a virtuous fellow, does getting the Black Star constitute an ignoble deed of some sort? (I know, "it's just a game", but I enjoy trying to stay true to the 'role' I decided to play at the outset.)

Morally gray at best; since you have corrupted an artifact in defiance of a daderic goddess to trap the souls of humans. Which interferes with their ability to pass into whatever afterlife they would. Me? i do it just because finding humans is easier.

I usually take it back to Aranea. She can become a very useful follower. Besides, Nelacar is a dolt.

I could never roleplay that choice. The Black Star just has too much utility to pass up.

I guess if it made you feel better you could always just trap the souls of conjurers, black mages, and the like.

Time for me to be a devil's advocate; from a RP perspective those people would often be punished in other ways after death. So by trapping them for your own use; not only are you succmbing to greed. You also are showing them mercy.

azura is a deadra, she isnt "good", so defying her is not automatically evil.

She is one of the few that's not considered bad though; also by obtaining the star then seeking to repair it you are acting out her will. Like i said at the best it's morally gray; though trapping human souls is widely considered evil by lore

Wow...thanks for all the responses, guys. I must admit, I fully expected to get blasted with "it's just a game, so who cares what you do?". But obviously, there are alot of players who take the 'RP' form 'RPG Games' as seriously as I do.

So, I was torn, but after reading your responses (and listening to Nelecar), I think the Black Star is morally acceptable. Since I only plan to use it on evil bandit thugs trying to kill me, I'm ok with their souls being sent to oblivion. And even tho Azura is the "good-est" of the Daedra...she IS still a Daedra. (And I'll admit...I was looking for a rationale for going the Black Star route, since it's gonna make enchanting hella easier...lol.)

Thanks everyone for your insightful responses.

Honestly i never liked Azura with all of her nonsense about fate; the utility of the black star for me was too great. Showing up azura....nearly too sweet.

Considering what Azura did to the Dunmer, I don't think it's unfitting.
What Azura did to the Dunmer, was punishment because of their disobedience. But the Dunmer instead of being ashamed, embraced it.

Turning Azura's Star into an artifact that can capture a black soul is something I find hardly useful since finding black souls (especially grand black souls) isn't easy.
But you get her favor by being obedient.

Black souls are the easiest; all humans have them. Also despite the dialog saying "It will no longer be able to trap white (Non-human) souls; it can still do so.

Basically it has no drawbacks to you aside from Azura whining about it; then losing a potenial follower which can be replaced.

All black souls are grand.

All black souls are grand.

Not so in the case of Azura's star. If you turn Azura's Star black, and it's the only soul gem you have, then you soul trap a mudcrab, your black soul gem will pick up a petty soul.

All the filled black soul gems you -find- will be grand, yes. But not necessarily the ones you fill yourself.

Mudcrab souls aren't black though. The thing about it only trapping black souls isn't true.

If the Black Star works like Black Soul gems, any human is a Grand Soul...right?
Docsprock Jan 13, 2017 @ 7:00pm
I often end up with dozens of black soul gems, have no use for the 'dark star'.
