Menu fix mod
Looked around for a bit, couldn't find anything so I'm hoping someone here will know somethings.
Basically when you press esc now it will open journal if you recently had your journal open, and the same the other way around.
Is there any mod to return this to oldrim where j is always journal and esc was always the save menu?

Nope sorry, but I'll let you know if I do

The menu will remember where you were in it. Use the J key to access your Journal menu. All you have to do is click on "System" to find your load, save, quit, control settings and gameplay settings.

Yes I know that, that's the problem. But that's not how it was in oldrim, I don't like how the menu remembers where you were last and I'd rather the keys opened the menu that you actually want, so J is always journal, esc is always save.

I'm pretty sure you can edit the key binding in the config. ini
Go in there and play around with it.

the options for the controls say the ESC key is to open the SYSTEMS tab, which is not the case, it opens the journal.
that's a bug.

It's not a bug. Both the J key andf the ESC key open whichever of the two menus you last had open. So esc will open journal if you last looked at the journal. It's suppoed to do that, it just sucks.

Sorry, but that doesn't make any sense.
In the options it clearly states ESC opens (it should open) the Systems tab and for J it states Journal.
But it doesn't therefore => Bug!

Yeah it says that but it doesn't, the fact that is says that is the bug. It's an intentional feature it's just not decribed in the keyconfig

It's workable, not like it breaks tha game or stops you from opening either menu, but its annoying and a bad design choice so I'm still looking to mod it back to the original scheme.

Listen. bug or not its an undesirable behaviour. I find it unreasonably annoying. Also this "fix":

doesn't even work.

This, combined with the annoying FO4 style running system, janky 3rd person camera movement, and general lack of mods makes me just want to go back to oldrim and all of its bugs and instability.

Dude, Nexus Mods is reliable enough with its Nexus Mods Manager...create an account there to download using it...and with a completely free account at Bethesda.net you can log into the Mods menu in Skyrim SE's start screen to access even more mods. The feature you speak of had no fix. Just check the keyboard commands while playing and it should show you the key you use.

FO4 was created using SkyrimSE's engine. The projects were worked on in tandem.

I would consider it a bug because this was not the behavior in 32-bit Skyrim. Further, the menus do not open as you describe (at least, not on mine). If I press J or ESC, it will open the Journal regardless of where I was last in the menu. Just tested to be sure I was remembering this right. ;)

(Controllers are not an excuse, this is the PC version)
The main problem is that when I press J it opens the save menu. It's annoying the other way round too but that's the main thing

For me it becomes a PITA when adjusting mod settings. Also, I don't like to always use F5 for saving as it will overwrite the previous. Sometimes I like to leave myself a few good save points to fall back to just in case I screwed myself over on something and didn't realize it until later.

As an example, if I travel to an area that then gets attacked (dragon, vampires, etc) and an NPC that I (personally) need/want to live that isn't essential dies, but I don't realize it right away, do some traveling/in & out of buildings so the auto-saves overwrite and maybe throw a quick save in there, then I realize the NPC is dead... unless I've also been occasionally doing manual saves, that's that, the NPC is dead and gone. Yeah, there are resurrect mods, but there are some things that happen in the background when an NPC dies that can't be undone.
