Long bow is BY FAR THE BEST weapon in the game. In close combat, a very very good one-handed sword (or axe) with a very good shield, gives you victory.
But WHY to come so close to a Troll or Giant or... what ever, when I can kill them almost instantly from 200+ yards far away?
Did I say you were wrong? No, bows are better. But you are talking about anecdotal reasons and history, both of which prove nothing in the game.
The wiki has the damage numbers and weapon rate of fire. Bows can do nearly 50% more damage and fire far faster then crossbows.
Bow>Crossbow
"3. Lightning and flames suck balls because magic doesn't scale in damage. All destruction magic sucks. Again these aren't crowd control."
You are wrong here. I killed the Ebondy Warrior and Karstaag with Destruction spells and they died quite easily. Not to mention the dozens of dragons (including revenant) that i have killed with destruction spells, as well as the thousands of other enemies that have died by desctruction magic.
Just started vampire hunting quests yesterday, and the normal crap x-bow you get for free, feels like a gatling gun compared to the bows.
The crossbows are generally ugly and the 'quiver' floats along behind you when sneaking, and I will not use them unless forced to.
But I checked out the enhanced dwarven one, upgraded with 272 smithing, and some special bolts on top of that. (had one of those in good old Morrowind)
And it actually felt insane! A gatling rocketlauncher! I put it in a storage box in my house for safekeeping..
But I'll stick with my homecrafted upgraded Nord Bow, with no enchants, (for RP reasons)
You must have mods on because a crossbow only fires once every 2-3 bow shots.
I have enchants on my armor with fortify archery and twohanded +45 on both, on some parts, (but only the parts that you can enchant without mods, as I'm playing a totally different game with my new char) but still it's a faster than fully drawing a normal Nord Bow! Not as much zoom maybe, but faster.
Except crowsbows can't fire faster then bows unless you have mods.
A Crossbow can't fire faster than a charged Zephyr
And a Crossbow won't fire faster than just speed clicking the bow, and not charging it
But it should fire faster than a normal charged bow.
The damage on the other hand, when using fire or shock bolts on Whiterun guards, the X-bow ALWAYS force them down on their knees, instead of killing them, even when sneaking!?
While the lower dmg Nord bow, with nord arrows ALWAYS kill them in one shot!?
To make it fair I should've used normal bolts for the X-bow.. but my Box in the house is really full of stuff I don't bother to carry around, so forgot to search for them.
But I still claim the Slowest X-bow is not slower then the heaviest Bow.
(Archery perks maxed out, as dragons seem to be able to fly
Nordic Bow base dmg 13, weight 11 <- what I use and will always use with this char
Dragonbone Bow base dmg 20 weight 20 <- Highest weight Bow=Slowest draw=best 1 shotter
Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow base Damage 22 weight 21
Do a test save and try them for yourself!

This is where the bow comes in; ROF and DPS is much higher.
Quite honestly the idea of a "Best Weapon" is hilarious to me; the best weapon will be the one that fits the situation.
PS-My playtime in skyrim SE is nonexistant; this is because i played more of OG skyrim.
Also Using the SetAV and ModAV commands is safe; even with stupid numbers it's extremely hard to break the game with them. TCL and Ressurect can break the game much easier.
Other peoples mods were good enough and i didnt have the time to experiment and learn; though i really miss some of the "Meltdown/Breakdown" mods from Pre-CK. Most of them now come with "Rebalancing" or "Fixes" to the smithing system. iv'e been tempted to make something fairly lightweight but updated for SSE/LE; with none of the "Fixes".
I make a lot of excuses but i could do it; it's just something i never felt like struggling with.
