Fast hit speed, fast reload speed, fasted firing ranged weapon in the game.
As for the slower reload time it is possible to do some exploit: unequipping then re-equipping crossbow by means of hotkeys will cause it to be reloaded.
Ok, you can get around the slow with your cheat, but I personally found that the damage was less than awe inspiring.
C: Cross bows suck and take the lore away from me lol. I'll stick to my bows. They shoot faster and are a better weapon in numbers like Locklave said. Damage is not really a concern to me.
It's reload time and slow walking during said reload makes it a worse weapon.
I compared this to an Enhanced Dwarven crossbow (improved using smithing skill like the bow) with dwarven bolts, which was doing slightly less damage.
I had been using exploding dwarven bolts, but I ran out. Meanwhile I can pick up ebony arrows off any enemy archer, making it sustainable. I am calculating it overall using the ammo I can restock off enemies rather than buying or crafting, and I mostly get Dwarven Bolts off Dwemer Spheres. If I could sustain the levels of Exploding Dwarven Bolts then I would reconsider, but that just doen't happen enough to make it viable.
