Parthunaax "yol" greeting bug. (Game Breaking). Please Help!
So I'm playing Skyrim SE and I'm at the point where I meet Parthunaax and he gives me "Yol", the word of power for fire breath. I've re-loaded this quest a few times now. At this point I've been able to determine that whether pre-unlocking the word to gain two words of power for fire breath instead of one doesn't change this bug. No matter what I do, once Parthunaax teaches me the word of power and then asks me to greet him with it, performing the greeting against him does not progress the quest. I hit him right in the face with the first word of fire breath, but he just keeps asking me to greet him with Yol and if I do it too many times, then he just starts to attack me and I am forced to kill him.

I'm playing on PC, so I'm wondering if there is a way to console command progression of this quest when it breaks or if this is just broken. I've played through this quest line in a previous playthrough and I don't remember ever having this issue before so this seems like something new. Thanks for any help or knowledge on this issue that you can provide.

I have Googled this for hours now and have not been able to find anyone who has experienced this so far in any forum.

You do shoot at him, like literally burn its face ?
Yes, I hit Paarthurnax right in the face with only the first word of fire breath, "yol" but this doesn't progress the quest at all. I have Googled the crap out of this and I can't find this exact issue anywhere else.

Have you spent a dragon soul to unlock the word, I know you shouldn't have too, but if all else has failed.
Yes, I've tried using a soul to unlock the word and I've tried by means of Paarthurnax teaching me it from his knowledge and neither method is working so far unfortunately.

mods changing dragon souls will break for you learning shouts........
same bug in both versions... if dragon souls are getting modded........
avoid mods that shange/use/affect dragon soul.... for this reason........
bug cause by bad player scripting where they forget to properly reference the dragonsouls....
since they edit the main script and not do a script addon...... what causes this bug in the first place.....

main script must be same as befor or it will break game functions...
but an extension is allowed to a script.
so mods with extension script work...
mods that edit main script break the game system....
simple as that....
so if dragon souls broken mostly its cause by the dragonsoul mods where the mod makers made it wrong...

Thank you, I have brought this to the attention of the mod author for the 1 of two mods I am using that alters shouts and specifically the mod that alters the fire breath shout and I await his reply after submitting a bug report. Hopefully the mod can just be turned off for the time of the greeting and then back on.

goody with exstention is old functinallity stays+ makes it compatible with game and other mods. in the way that your extended functions you can call them by you spells and script and quest in game.
and packaging that script inside the mod package, it will prevent gobal override
and that script is then aviable to that mod and all mods that inherit from it....

Hi, sorry to revive a dead thread, but I'm having this issue at the moment. I've been looking through my mods, but my only shout-related mod is one that removes the cooldown. I tried turning that on and off, but no dice. I did use the mod guide that lists a whole bunch of quality of life mods and fixes, but I'm in the middle of looking through those to see what could possibly be touching shout coding to cause this bug, but i haven't seen anything so far. Any tips?

You can't turn a mod on and off, mods bake data into saves, so to test it without that mod you need a save made before you installed the mod (then you can turn the mod off, load the save and see).

Secondly, and I do say this a lot, any mod can affect anything in the game if it is the wrong place in your load order. If you have MO2 or Vortex, use the built in sorting function, otherwise get LOOT and use that to sort the load order (click apply after you sort or it actually does nothing)

okay so resorting didn't seem to work, so onto part one of your post. Just to clarify, do you mean loading a save from before this quest is activated, then disabling the mod right before Throat of the World begins? or an entire new save file?

You need an entirely new save file (or one from before you installed the mod).

But first, Eli, if you used a specific mod guide for your build, you should be asking the author of the guide - as they are the one who compiled it and would know if there are any issues. Other wise, the best way of determining what mod is causing a CTD is by following this general outline:

Troubleshooting Your Load Order

(from PINNED TOPIC Helpful Links and References, Section 5 - General Troubleshooting)

As to the disabling of mods on a current save, there is this - which fully explains the issue:

You CANNOT Remove Mods Mid-Playthrough

Good luck!

No, you need a save from before you installed the mod.
Because mods bake their data into saves, so deactivating them doesn't stop the effects of the mod.

See smr's post for some good links to help you

apologies in advance if this seems basic; I shoulda mentioned in my first post that this is my First proper modded PC playthrough of Skyrim, after being stuck on console all this time.
Hrmm, well if it's the 'remove shout cooldown' mod, i've had that installed since day 1 of my playthrough. that would mean i'd need to start an entire new playthrough without that one mod, then can turn it back on after this one quest, correct?
smr1957 Jul 20, 2023 @ 3:57pm
Yes, that is correct.

Yes, I know it seems a longwinded way of dealing with it, but as I said the mods bake data into saves, so you can't simply turn them off and on.

Also as I first mentioned, any mod can affect anything in the game, so make sure you are sorting the load order (either with LOOT or the builtin sorting function of some mod managers)
