with it like that you get a log with all wraning, error and such where you can exactly track what caused the crash....
ps opening settings in game, looking at quest and so forth is the log mesasage Freeze VM.... since yes papyrus pauses the game = Freezing the state......
fastest way to uncover what mod script will cause your crash............
ps once you did that setting change you will have to run the game once more and have it cause the same crash to receive that log
log is saved in your %userprofile% where settings and save files are stored.....
