Why Skyrim isn't a good RPG.
There are many reasons why Skyrim isn't a good RPG. It's still an RPG, just not a very good one.

What part of the Role Playing Game, skyrim, isnt a Role Playing Game?

Are you an elf in real? :war:

the fact that the character's own abilities and skills don't come in to play as much as in other RPG's. Also the fact that very little you do affects the world. It's still a decent game, (in my opinion) but it's not a really good RPG.

So... uh... what's the purpose of this topic? Stating meaningless opinions?

Um, that's the mechanics of an RPG rather than the core aspect. The core of an RPG is the basis of you playing a character, which does.

However it does allow contradictory playthroughs, were a character switches between being a Paragon of Virtue to a true Villian, and vice-versa, in a second for no reason.

It has problems, but it is a free-form RPG.

you're right about the core concept of an RPG, but i'm saying that Skyrim isn't a "pure" rpg, due to how it's missing many of the mechanics and aspects of a true RPG.

As someone who has played rpgs since '88 both video and board, you couldn't be more wrong.

Seriously? If you side with either the Stormcloaks or the Legion, the outcome is totally different for each. How is that not affecting the game world? Or you can choose to side with no one at all and just wander about, leaving the conflict as it is. Plus you can make a choice whether to be a low-life thief, a blood thirsty assassin, or be more noble about things and be the head of a band of warriors or the arch-mage of a school of magic. Then of course you can choose to be either a werewolf or a master vampire. There's plenty of role playing choices you can make.

There ARE plenty of choices you can make, but they have little effect on the people and life of the world. You can just leave the main quest be and nobody dies because of Alduin eating the world. If you aid the stormcloaks/imperials, nobody ever says "oh no, the stormcloaks won. too bad i'm an imperial," you just have more forts with a stormcloak banner.
