Attacked on sight when entering Gray-Mane house

For whatever reason when I enter the Gray-Mane house to meet Fralia at the beginning of the Missing In Action quest, Avulstein starts attacking me and the conversation with him never starts. I've reloaded the save multiple times and tried it at different times in the day ingame but he always tries to kill me without starting the conversation needed to continue the quest. Anyone know what to do with this?

did you pick the lock by any chance or do you have mods that alter behavior of the AI (immersive citizen or such)?

Or, are you wearing any imperial armor?

I entered the house legitimately, and I'm not wearing Imperial armor either. I'm also playing almost totally vanilla except for SkyUI 2.2 (the newest one that works without SKSE) and I doubt a simple interface mod would change NPC behavior.
Come to think of it, though, I AM wearing elven armor. Considering this is a Stormcloak house I'm visiting, would they react to that the same as Imperial armor?

He normally runs to attack you, then Fralia stops him and then a bunch of chatting begins...
Is Fralia in the house when he attacks you?
Also, do you have a follower with you? If the follower attacks him before the dialogue starts, then that could be the cause.

Try calm spell on him? Also generally NPCs only attack when they detect you. So if you can keep undetected then scripts triggered conversations still happen normally. I once aggrieved grey beards but when I approached them sneakily and in invisible state, they recognized me as a dragonborn.

Well, I had a similar problem with Ulfric!!!! The only thing that solved that, it was to wait... a whole game-week (7 days) outside the Palace and then when I enter... nothing happen, all good.

Something else, not so off-topic.
I have a side-quest to find a full Glass armor kit for this fella, A. Grey-Mane. I did it, collected them all, I'm trying to get to his house but it's always locked (day or night), the map shows his mark IN ULFRIC's Palace, I'm going there to give the armor... and there is NO Grey-Mane there!
Only the map-mark on an empty spot just in front of Ulfric's throne!

Looks like it may have been because of my elven armor. I returned after a while wearing thieve's guild equipment and he went straight into his dialogue instead of attacking.
