Can't buy houses
Does anybody know why i can't buy any house in the whole game? i tried in several cities, they always offer me the dialogue but then there is no option to buy it, there is always only "i have to think about it" or "i dont have the money". i do have the money (not that difficult if you think of only 5000 gold for the house in whiterun and even this one i can't buy).

any ideas?

Any of the money stolen?

Do you have any mods? All houses are governed by a single quest. If something improperly edits the quest, it's possible that none of the houses will work.

no i play the special edition without mods and i have plenty of money

Are you the actual Thane of any of the nine holds yet? The criteria is, become Thane ( which will involve a specific quest ) AND help the people of the respective hold.

Edit: Whiterun is an exception, insofar as, Dragon Rising is seen as helping the people.

Lakeview Manor is also an exception. You don't haveto be thane to buy property, you just have to run a quest to be eligible to buy.

Oh, yeah - my bad. But HF homes? That's buying land, not a house, if you want to be picky :D

That's true. It does cost the same as Breezehome though, and you are given enough supplies to build the small home.

în solitude and windhelm its part of the thane quest to buy a house .... its confusing, it worked the one day but i did choose the wrong parts for my lakeview mansion (the wrong house parts) because i didn't know i only could choose i per section and i reloaded the game ... didn't work again ...

Hmm.. I don't generally " reload " a game, ever. I always quit to desktop and load my chosen save from the start menu. I have no evidence to back it up but I'm sure the game doesn't fully reset everything with an immediate quick or manual reload. Paranoia or what - lol :-)

AFAIK, you can't buy the Windhelm house until after either the Civil War quest is completed or Season Unending is resolved but I don't like that drab old house anyway.

For me, the Solitute house ( Haafinger? ) is available @ help citizens 5 / 5 but doesn't clear from my quest list until help citizens 6 / 5 pops up. It isn't tied to any other hold and each of the nine holds has a seperate requirement for Thaneship.

I'm probably waffling, I just woke up :D

Solitude house Proudspire manor, requires you to put a hunting horn on a shrine of talos for Elisef.

All the five city houses have a quest attached.
Whiterun, Breezehome, get the dragonstone then kill a dragon.
Markath, get the jarl's brother's shield back, then kill a Forsworn leader in another quest.
Windhelm, Blood on the Ice
Riften, deal with the skooma dealers in riften.
Solitude, Proudspire Manor, deal with wolf queen Potema Septim, then put the hunting horn on a talos shrine.

@ alex

You can completely bypass Season Unending by first completing the Civil War quest, which also changes the requirements ( and Jarl ) for Dawnstar - thaneship and land purchase, too. Good game eh? :-)

Edit: Potema ( spelling? )

Personally, if I were that desperate to buy the houses, I'd go back to when I reloaded at Lakeview Manor and load my save from the start menu. There is / was an old bug in the game which prevents you from buying houses but over the years I've never seen a working solution for it and I've never encountered it myself. It's obviously a rare bug and even the unofficial patch doesn't bother to address it. Probably because nobody knows precisely what breaks the house purchase quest in the first place - broken alias? Who knows. Sorry I can't help :((

I always do season Unending, mainly to kill Calixo, the nutter.

Calixo? The Necromancer in Blood on the Ice? You're saying he dies? What about the quest? That's a new one on me, alex, but then I've always completed Blood on the Ice by such time :-)
