Cleaning Dirty Files
I recently installed a mod to my Skyrim SE and while I was at it I installed NMM, LOOT, and TES5Edit (because knowing myself, this won't be the only mod I install). While running LOOT for the first time I got the message indicating I have dirty files. So I read the tutorials, guides, etc. for cleaning them and have a question.

I understand the basics and have watched videos so I get what to do with the tool but the info I found for dirty plugins advises to manually clean 4 files from Dawnguard but doesn't say if I do that before I clean the whole .esm file, after I clean the .esm file, or what.

I appreciate any guidance out there :)

You should avoid cleaning non-master files unless otherwise specified.

I do plan to clean only the master files but my confusion is with the Dawnguard file and the 4 files that are supposed to be cleaned manually from that DLC. I am not sure if I do the manual clean first or second. Thanks for the advice! 🙂 and thanks for the link!

You let tes5edit clean the master first, then do the manual cleaning.

If you want to do it, check this: https://afkmods.iguanadons.net/index.php?/topic/4110-manual-cleaning-skyrim-and-skyrim-se-master-files/#comment-153846

It's more up-to-date. Mostly the new thing is this you have to clean Dawnguard.esm twice. So, the order would be:

1. Update.esm
2. Dawnguard.esm
3. Dawnguard.esm (Yes, it needs to be done twice)
4. Hearthfire.esm
5. Dragonborn.esm

Also, you mentioned that you're using TES5Edit which is not SSEEdit. Download SSEEdit from here: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/164/

Thanks for that info. I think I figured it out finally.

I did install SSEEdit - I just didn't type the right tool when I posted. The link was very helpful. SSEEdit for Dummies! *points at self* Thank you!

There are two "Schools" about cleaning them - one says "yes, absolutely", the other says "No!".

I'm following the first "School" and the VERY FIRST thing I'm doing after a new fresh install, is to CLEAN the master files.

From what I have experienced you no longer need to clean Dawnguard twice, at least I have not had to for some months now. Easy enough to check. Just clean once and then run LOOT again.

That is true, but, for some reason Dawnguard doesn't get a full 100% cleaning the first time. Doing it a second time make dawnguard 100% clean and free from possible problems.

Dawnguard still needs to be cleaned twice. There are wild edits that are not picked up and have to be removed manually.
