It’s a must have MOD for Skyrim or Skyrim RE, no questions asked, if you ask me.
It is a MOD that shows how much was missing in Skyrim vanilla and how sloppy Bethesda done it + RE adds only visuals, it does not fix any bugs.
I wouldn't consider it that at all. I tried it with Oldrim and I didn't see a big improvement over the graphics because of it. Any changes it made were pretty marginal for the most part.
The only things I really honestly notice being different in-game (as in, *notice* rather than *if I look for them they are noticeably better*) are a/ barrels and b/ those wooden fences around some of the smaller bits of farmland (such as in Falkreath). I also think things like the chains and ropes and stuff *do* look better with SMIM, but I never really noticed them looking bad before, and I rarely notice them looking better now, because, well, I don't really notice them much.
(Because it has a FOMOD installer, you can also pick and choose which elements to have, so I could, if I felt like it, go back and re-run the FOMOD installer and *just* pick barrels and fences, I think. Touch wood, I haven't noticed any performance loss with it fully installed though, so I'm leaving it for now.)
