Shovel.
Quick question regarding shovel in game. Is it used for something in vanilla game, similar how axe and pick is used? Just curious, never thought about it.

Not that I've noticed. And I've got quite a few hours into the game so far. I've never needed a shovel for anything though.

Wiki says:
Both are designed for shoveling ore or coal into a smelter or a forge, as they both are flat blade models.

Other than the smelter animation, the shovel has no further use.
Funny thing, you dont need to have one, so its useless after all..

It's just trash loot, like most small items in the game.

Enderal made use of them with digging nodes, but I haven't seen any standard skyrim mods that do this. It felt like a natural addition to me.

Suspect that could have been Fallout New Vegas...

Think it was just something for which was added since there was a pickaxe they thought might as well add a shovel. Just like if you notice you don't find any Coral what so ever in the game not even under water yet there is a Coral Claw
