Thief companion
i'm making a thief character but due to the focus on thief skills he won't be good in combat,so i'm looking for a companion which can help in combat when ♥♥♥♥ hits the fan (i.e i get spotted and/or attacked by a dragon/unavoidable battle like alduin)

if playing a thief get the three crafting stuff maxed out. Get a bow and gets it dmg to 1k dmg output with adventure gear. You should be able to take dragons down in a few shots with that. The last thing you want is a follower if your a thief as no follower is sneaky unless you get a mod that does that.

A problem with the non-thief companions is that they suck at stealth. If you want to stay with stealth, I'd use Jenassa since I think she actually has some stealth skill. If you want to forget it, use any of the huscarls or other beefy warriors to be your tank while you plink away with a bow and arrow.

http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Jenassa You know, the Dark Elf in Whiterun?

Anyways, here's the whole list of vanilla (non-modded) followers: http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Followers

Give him/her some default boots with muffle/sneak. Might help.

um, invest in light armour and weapon skills, companions will get you killed in the really tough fights, you need to balance the skills you have.

I would suggest the character mod Inigo. He is good in a scrap (starting off with Obsidian weapons, but in his "home" is a chest where you can swap them out with something less overpowered), but still has a good sneak value.

i don't use mods but solo actually works well for me,when i'm alone i can use the shadow warrior perk to get sneak attacks with daggers even in combat so i can do good damage

After looking at the wiki pages a bit, it seems like non-dlc followers lack any perks, but the ones from the dlcs do. I'd say go with Ralis Sedarys if you can get him becuase he doesn't use magic (magic attack will give you both away in a heart beat of course), has sneak as a tagged skill, and has a max level of 60. He also has Augmented Flames (I) so give him a fire weapon for boosted damage.

The only down side is that he is in a tough area (you can easily get killed trying to even get to him at low levels), you have to beat a tough boss, pay something like 10 000 gold, wait a number of days and clear a dungeon of Daugar.

I've found that being a mage/thief/assassin is a really good combo.

Thief skills to make money, mage skill to reinforce those theiving abilities, assassin skills to take down enemies from afar, and also mage skills for when poo hits the fan.

Using all three areas of skill also keeps your character from being overpowered.
