The Golf Club VR

The Golf Club VR

Open-faced contact on every swing
I am not a scratch golfer but I've played for years on and off so I feel like I have a good understanding of how swing mechanics work. I am loving this game but what I am having trouble with is the fact that when I make contact and look at the 3d swing the club face is 99% of the time open-faced and either hitting the shaft end or toeing the ball. If I close off my grip and address the ball with a super closed face then swing then my contact is perfect.

I've always struck the ball fairly well IRL so I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if this is a known issue. Maybe it's just the fact that I'm swinging a light controller instead of a golf club? I'm trying to down swing with my hands ending up in the same position as when I address the ball but I'm way off.

I think there are a few things in play here and you mentioned one for sure. The weight of the controller definitely takes some getting used to. A couple other things to play around with would be the length of the club you are using and the flex of that shaft. These will both have a big impact on how you're striking the ball. These can all be tuned in gameplay settings. Let me know if this helps.

pdawg - I've had the exact same issue and like you, I'm an experienced golfer. I think it's mostly due to the lack of weight and weight distribution. It's not easy to adapt to swinging like this and I think it causes me (and it sounds like you) to not get my wrists squared back up at impact.

Like you I've had to compensate by rolling the controller in my hand to close the club face WAY up before swinging. I've also had to address the ball with only the outer tip of the club face being lined up with the ball. It's difficult and DEFINITELY makes me concentrate but it works.

I'm also having an issue of hitting way under the ball so I have to use the shorter club possible to offset this.

I'm going to play around with my swing a bit more to see if moving the ball more in my stance helps

I wonder - Could some type of interface be built into the game to help a player tune the settings for their desired/standard/normal/natural swing path/height, etc?

Would that even make any sense to have?

I'm not sure what it is you're asking for exactly. Did you want to give some more detail on what you're expecting to be able to achieve?

The swing path should generally match up with your real world swing. However there is still that issue to get through with the lack of weight from the controller vs the club and not physically being able to set the club behind the ball.

Thanks I'll give these suggestions a try tonight.

In response to club length I will try the next shorter club but I'm 6'3" so I figured I should use the longest.

Will report back tonight thanks all!

I don't honestly have the VR version or a Vive yet so please disregard anything I say that isn't making sense in the context of the current game and its features.
