Tried every suggestion posted but still will not launch in Windows 10. Getting the following error message:

Engine.exe - Application Error. The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022).

Runs just fine on my Win7 machine.

Wasted an entire day trying to figure it out but I got it to launch ! ! ! This is what worked for me:

1) Set both engine.exe and startengine.exe compatibility to XP3.

2) Set log.txt to read only.

3) Rename settings.cfg and settings.xml (i.e. I renamed as settings.oldcfg and settings.oldxml respectivley).

4) Search bar for "Windows Features", activate, then click on Legacy Components, expand and then click DirectPlay.

I did not delete any .bik files. I did not copy d3d8.dll into the directory.

@sio467 Yes! It works! But it lags as hell. Did you find any solution for this?
sio467 Apr 12, 2018 @ 5:49am
I didn't encounter any lag issues. I'm running on
-CPU: AMD FX-4300 Qaud-Core 3.80GHz
-RAM: 16.0 GB
-VID: Radeon RX 466

Thats probably the best solution against the lag.

for me it works with the basics version of Cossacks 2, but it`s weird that I have 17 fps ingame --> laggs :(

Have to edit this Post:
After I go to the log.txt in the game files, and make it read-only --> it eliminates my problems, and now it runs with 170 fps !
Man, i will merry you)) you soulved my problem with what i fight last days! Thank you))

Forget the Steam version, it's crap. GOG version of Cossacks II ($1.99) plays perfectly straight out of the box.
