Check this thread. Emperor's fix worked for me:

Is the game sluggish / laggy for you? It's super choppy when I play it after running the fix you mentioned. I'm using Windows 10 anniversary edition.

Hi, for me it is not. I have only some texture issues on individual maps (but that's not big issue for me as I don't play them often, I like general european campaign more). Try to make log.txt readonly if the game is slow or search for other solutions in this thread.

hay in the setam folder were cossaks 2 is there should be 2 folders that are 2 and 3. what you do is delete these and it stops the startup crash but the thing you need to also do is delete the 2 settings folders make logs read only if lagging and set your compatability mode on engine to xp pacage 2 not 3 3 wont work.now the lines and pixels can be fixed by going to your screen / dsktop and rightclicking screen.
i
also if you look up american conqust there first game it has tutorials that fix this the same way.

Well i know that Cossacks European Wars are same as Cossacks II Napoleonic Wars... OS : Windows 2000 / XP . I tried all ways and not working at all. Maybe the last way is actually buy a XP to run it so :steammocking:

im able to run the program but i get weird lines all over the screen making it impossible to play
Yes, I got crazy line graphics that continued to get worse as the seconds passed. Exact same thing with Cossacks 2 Napolean but both Cossacks 1 games seem to work fine. '
Steam had no problem refunding my money though.

i have this issue weird lines!

I had similar issue with Cossacks 2: Battle for Europe and managed to resolve it. I hope the text below will help somebody who also wants to play this great game (instead of that sh**tty cossacks 3 :steammocking:)

PC characteristics:
- Windows 10 x64
- 16GB ram
- Graphics card is high-end (GTX 980) (btw, I had tried to switch to integrated card but it just made things worse)

The initial issue:
I installed the game and couldn't run it. When I clicked on the .exe it just didnt' run. I've tried a lot of different solutions described in the internet (including this thread), like compatibility mode, some patches, removing some stuff, etc.

My resolution:
1. Finally I didn't remove any files from C2: BfE and didn't rename any folders inside of it (one exception - settings.xml which is autogenerated after game run)
2. I copied file d3d8.dll from C:\Windows\SysWOW64 directory to the root of the game as mentioned somewhere on this thread. After that I managed at least to get "AGP Aperture size" error when I had clicked on the game .exe (as I mentioned above - initially I were getting nothing after click on .exe).
3. Final step - I copied D3Dengine.dll and startengine.exe files to game root (but not those from the video above, which are for Napoleonic Wars and overwrites game existing files), the files can be downloaded over here - http://cossacksworld.ucoz.co.uk/load/c_ii_patches/napoleonic_wars/c_ii_3d_patch_for_high_end_graphic_cards/51-1-0-142 (note: you have to register on that site to get "download" link)
When you copy those two files, they overwrite nothing in your root.

I couldn't run startengine.exe initially, so I changed its compatibility mode to Windows XP and then I got the game working!

P.S. Also I made log.txt readonly, but do not think that this helped. You can try, it breaks nothing at least.
P.P.S. Do not remove all settings files, they are needed for some UI and AI stuff (e.g., when I renamed all of them, game was still working but some UI stuff was invisible, AI was like disabled, enemies didn't tried to do something at all, etc.). You need to rename/remove only that one settings.xml as I mentioned in step 1.

i got application load error 5

What i did was to get it to work was: Disable steam overlay, run it in windows XP service pack 2 compability mode plus remove all .bik files, and i had to do all of these things, i tried them all individually but didn't work. So now it finally works :D EDIT: Also change the log.txt file to "read only" to fix the low fps. Lots of stuff to do to get the game working, but it's worth it :)

I did exactly this and it solved all issues, the game is now playable without any issues.

Also change the log.txt file to "read only" to fix the low fps - Just do this and everything is fine !

Thanks for the recommendations, this thread should be made sticky to stay on top.

Just to sum it up:

1) Disable "Steam Overlay" in the general options of the game.

2) Delete all *.bik files in the installation folder and subfolders
Deleting them seems to have done the trick. These are the video-files btw, VLC media player is able to open and play them.

3) Set compatibility mode of the "engine.exe" (in installation folder) to Windows XP SP2
Personally, after doing the above in No. 2, I don't even have to do this.

4) If game performance is poor, set the "log.txt" (in installation folder) file to "read-only". If this file does not exist, start the game once or just create it manually.

The game is still a bit buggy on startup, screen resolutions change wildly and sometimes the game is minimized in the taskbar, where I have to click on it, to bring it back to fullscreen. However: After the main menu screen of the game is loaded, it works.

Your post has to be sticked, nice summary of the solutions!

I cant run it, i have tried all indicated here sometime twice. Didnt work. Asked Steam for support they redirect me to GSC.... no answer.

So, I have fixed it for myself, finally. Trick was to disable steam overlay and delete ALL .BIK files in the game folder and its subfolders (Use total commander for that for instance). 2 hrs skirmish against cpu and not a single crash.
I did propably some of the other fixes in this guide, but they made no difference for me initially, and can;t put my finger to it, which I did use...

The Game will need you to run it at a older version, if u have XP pack 3 works best, ifit does not run, then your graphics card is too advance for the game.

To check, right click on the desktop shortcut, click properties, compatability, and change it to run in Windows XP

-KEEP IN MIND THIS IS DLC AND U NEED THE FIRST COSSACKS 2 GAME TO RUN OR IT CRASHES DUE TO ERROR

You can try Gog.com version, I don't try but I know these guys publishing old games with fixing problems.
