1.) Go to engine.exe in your folders,
2.) Right click on it and then press troubleshoot blablabla thing
3.) Let it do its thing and allow the windows xp thing
4.) After that, if it still dosent work, then go to your normal cossacks folder and locate a file called log, make that text document read only.
5.) If that still does not work, then you must once again go to your files, scroll until you find any type of file that has the word setting/settings in them, and just delete them
I HOPE THIS HAS HELPED IF NOT THEN REPLY BACK
for your second suggestion, there is no log file in my cossacks2 bfe folder
for the last option, i renamed the 2 settings files , but still no go, this time i get still no game loading but now also showing is the theFMManager Error message on screen, which states "VirtualAlloc heap reserve failed
Not enough memory to run programm"
any way around this ?
my com has 16gb ram and 40 gig of available free space, so teh FMManager Error makes no sense to me
I once had the Not enough memory to run program and I found no way to fix this apart from upgrading to windows 10 which for some reason fixed that and created other problems,
I will try to find solutions to this error, it would be useful if you look at your files, remember them all, try to launch it and see if anything is different even the tiniest bits
Thanks
1. You need the C2_Patch_v1_2.exe (google that exact thing and download it)
2. Download Universal Extractor (google it and download it
3. Use Universal Extractor to extract the C2_Patch_v1_2.exe patch into any file you want on your desktop
4. Copy and paste extracted patch into the root folder for Cossacks 2 c:/programfiles(x86)-Steam-steamapps-common-Cossacks II Napoleonic Wars
5. Run game using startengine.exe button in root folder
If it comes up with a message about your bios/256 mb thing, then
6. Download the c2-hoae-3d-patch.zip and copy and paste its contents into the same root folder the first patch went in and run the game using the startengine.exe button
That is a known fix for napoleonic wars, but I do not know if it will work with bfe, and i cannot test it as i do not have the problem srry :(
so back to the safe harbour of windows 7 - getting games like c2 bfe working again makes it all more worth doing so.
Hope it will help in Battle for Europe too.
PC characteristics:
- Windows 10 x64
- 16GB ram
- Graphics card is high-end (GTX 980) (btw, I had tried to switch to integrated card but it just made things worse)
The initial issue:
I installed the game and couldn't run it. When I clicked on the .exe it just didnt' run. I've tried a lot of different solutions described in the internet (including this thread), like compatibility mode, some patches, removing some stuff, etc.
My resolution:
1. Finally I didn't remove any files from C2: BfE and didn't rename any folders inside of it (one exception - settings.xml which is autogenerated after game run)
2. I copied file d3d8.dll from C:\Windows\SysWOW64 directory to the root of the game as mentioned somewhere on this thread. After that I managed at least to get "AGP Aperture size" error when I had clicked on the game .exe (as I mentioned above - initially I were getting nothing after click on .exe).
3. Final step - I copied D3Dengine.dll and startengine.exe files to game root (but not those from the video above, which are for Napoleonic Wars and overwrites game existing files), the files can be downloaded over here - http://cossacksworld.ucoz.co.uk/load/c_ii_patches/napoleonic_wars/c_ii_3d_patch_for_high_end_graphic_cards/51-1-0-142 (note: you have to register on that site to get "download" link)
When you copy those two files, they overwrite nothing in your root.
I couldn't run startengine.exe initially, so I changed its compatibility mode to Windows XP and then I got the game working!
P.S. Also I made log.txt readonly, but do not think that this helped. You can try, it breaks nothing at least.
P.P.S. Do not remove all settings files, they are needed for some UI and AI stuff (e.g., when I renamed all of them, game was still working but some UI stuff was invisible, AI was like disabled, enemies didn't tried to do something at all, etc.). You need to rename/remove only that one settings.xml as I mentioned in step 1.
Keep up this nice community for Cossacks 2 !
Thank you so much--your method works!
I'll also note that the high end 3d card patch can also be downloaded here (no registration required): http://www.patches-scrolls.com/cossacks2.php
Also, I think you need to keep the game at 1024x768. When I tried to change resolution the game froze on me, but at 1024x768 it runs perfectly.
