This is close to real life (the slider)..in that different paddles bounce and grip the ball differently.
For example, there are flat rubber, anti-spin rubber, short pimpled rubber, long pimpled rubber...and each can be made using different chemical ratios for a different amount of tack/friction.
At the same time, paddles in real life come with different amount of foam between the blade (wood) and the rubber surfaces. More foam usually results in a springier hit, while no foam results in a very loud and not efficient hit.
So, the game is unrealistic only in the respect that you are able to change the parameters back and forth without going through a store and without going through the manufacturing process :)
but otherwise it matches reality.
In terms of the slider values - currently I think the speed slider is close to the range found nowadays, while the spin slider (in the current steam build) is lacking on the upper end. This will be patched up tonight.
If you are wondering which values you should set for yourself: it really depends on your skill level. Beginners tend to do better with lower speed paddle settings, and 25% friction (on the current slider).
Looking forward to patch.
