Freezing screen when battle starts
I bought and downloaded the game, remembering the joy it brought me as a kid, and was surprised that even though I am using Windows 8.1 the game seemed to be working. After that successful feeling I decided to go through a quick skirmish.. After starting the random map battle, my workers and the map popped up on my screen, the music played, and my mouse could move but my screen was basically frozen. Anyone else have this problem? And does anyone have a fix?

Though this discussion is probably dead, I too have this problem except I use Windows 7.

thekortor I think all I did was uninstall and reinstall the game. Otherwise, I think the problem somehow resolved itself, as in it just stopped doing whatever it had been. I apologize I could not be more help, this happened a while ago!

My solution in Win7 x64 was to set the screen resolution to 1280 x 800 via the screen's context menu (right click on your wallpaper and select Screen Resolution). I did not need to set any compatibility options on the exe files themselves.

I have tried everything up to the native monitor resolution of 1920 x 1200, but nothing above 1280 x 800 works, even though it did the first time I played each of the games. Back to War is still an issue for me as it won't work like the others on the same resolution.

I also have 3 monitors with one being a different resolution. Since the game was written when multi-monitor systems were rare occurrences, I sometimes wonder if this is the problem, but I don't want to bother disabling my screens to try and figure that out. Oh, and if you have a multi-monitor set up - make sure you select your main monitor in the Screen Resolution window before setting the resolution.

This worked for me too, thanks. Maybe someone should rename to make it easier to find.

yeah, true. For me it wasn't when battle starts, but rather Cossacks failed to start.

maybe the key words here are: Cossacks, not working, failed to start, won't work, starts but stops working, won't initialize/initialise, video issues, ...
