They are all about being in a situation out of your control, unlike most other games that are about empowering the character and player.
The 'horror' games where you can fight back properly are more like action games with a horror themed skin.
I just think that large scale combat doesn't fit into a proper horror game.

The gun shown is also likely symbolic. Firearms are strongly dependent on the atmosphere they are in to work and we don't know anything about this Hell. If there's not enough oxygen it won't fire and if there's too much it will explode and I expect methane and sulphur to be high in concentration too given that what we've been shown is constructed entirely from the remains of people who have fallen into Hell. Assuming everyone in Hell is dead and are not longer relying on normal biological functions, an atmosphere like Earth would be a luxury that wouldn't be encouraged. Like the fertility statue, the gun's purpose is rooted in what it represents instead of it's expected function I reckon.
