Murder Is Game Over: Final Fright came as an opportunity in response to a tragedy. Last year, things were going great with this game series, and suddenly, one of the main console manufacturers changed the policy in a way that was not favorable. Instead of being a hardworking developer focused on telling the best murder mystery stories I’m capable of, I was now considered a “spammer” because I release multiple small games. As a result, I had to freeze Murder Is Game Over: Treasure & Terror, the bigger and more ambitious project I originally had planned for this year.

I responded by making this smaller game, because it no longer made sense to do the same amount of work and lose half my income. Murder Is Game Over: Final Fright is paced more like a Scooby-Doo episode rather than a Hercule Poirot novel. There are 3 suspects instead of 8. There are fewer than 10 clues. There are only a small number of map spaces. The story is structurally simpler. The positive is that the smaller project scope decreased my stress level very significantly, and may have improved my writing because I was able to concentrate more on a small number of interactions without getting overwhelmed. I’m particularly proud of some of the dialogue in this project.

What do players like? If this kind of light, short-form mystery is a hit, then it’s definitely much easier for me to make more. If length and complexity are the most important features, then it could be disappointing. I guess we’ll see what the response is like! As things get tougher, I hope that Murder Is Game Over fans will enjoy this story, and I really appreciate the fan loyalty I’ve felt with this series.
