Dark Wizard battle, what to do?

I can't figure out what to do once you defeat the Kings warrior, and the wizard starts jumping around the screen. How are you supposed to attack him?

You can catch him on platform near the sun.

You must be lucky and never die it is 1/100 chance to win.
If you die delete and restart

I sat on the first stage of the wizard, waiting for the wizard to come back, grabbing the mobs down the stairs.
