I experimented a little bit; made a copy of the PCCustom folder and pasted it to the correct directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Bastard Bonds) and renamed the example png "Baako" to "Zantanak" and later on "Greave" as tests. Then I attempted to load my save files and created new characters, neither case worked. Kept getting my demon pal in all his crimson glory.
I'm assuming the the size of the sprite I made didn't affect anything. It's a png within the range of 84x60 pixels although it takes up most of the space (it's PaD's Zuoh, he's a pretty beefy guy). And even if the png was a bit screwy it would still show up as something weird rather than the default sprite no?
In relation to the original post, character sprites can be replaced by simply adding your custom one to the PCCustom folder as mentioned earlier. I think you can also drop the sprite into the Roster folder to have it appear within the game randomly as a recruitable ally (maybe I heard this one wrong). Or if you meant how edit the existing character sprites, your jailbreak/campfire buddies, I don't believe you can unless you have the png's of them which I don't think are provided.
In general, if you want your own modded sprites, you can just create them yourself. Other threads mentioned the paint.net program to create your sprites from scratch which is handy. But if you've drawn up an image you want to use, you can use clippingmagic.com to edit it even further by removing backgrounds. Normally if you want to download your finished product from this site you would need a subscription, but through the miracle of screenshots/snipping tool and powerpoint 2013, you can save your edit with the former and make transition fixes and save with the latter. This was my process anyway. In the end I just used paint.net for resizing. Note: With this method, your image will most likely start out large and then change drastically upon shrinking. May or may not turn out a bit fuzzy compared to the rest of the game. Hope this info helps.
Where did you take that PCCustom folder from?
Actually all Save files, Roster files & PCCustoms are now in your My Documents/Bastard Bonds, that is from the OLD system before patch 1.2.9 . Just made my main character the opera loving shopkeeper from Crypt of the Necrodancer
