Movement animation?
So I was just watching the trailer on the store page, and I'm kinda surprised to see a character just bounce along the ground like a South Park character... surely my eyes are decieving me?

It's an indie game with tons of playable and non playable characters. What did you expect ?
Burusagi Sep 19, 2016 @ 12:07pm
Well, for one which sells itself on the pixel art, at the very least animations for things like that.
Ben Sep 19, 2016 @ 12:26pm
What do you mean ? Do you know that animating pixel art characters is way more time consuming than doing animation with 3D models ? There are 1000 characters in this game. This shouldn't be too hard to understand...

I mean that a game that prides itself on it's pixel art should at the very least have friggin' walking animations. They're far from hard to do, and from the trailer there is a lot of re-used assets so it is not 1000 unique characters; do a walking animation for one and you've done it for a whole bunch that use that sprite as a base.

I mean... characters bouncing about like South Park characters is laughable.

South Park is the best comparison you can do ? LOADS of RPG games don't use animations because :
1. they want to provide a great amount of content, which is most of the time incompatible with gorgeous graphics and animations.
2. they are indie and don't have much resources.
3. making good animations is hard. I DO prefer no animation than crappy animations in this kind of game.

I'm pretty sure they didnt make this choice to offend you...

No. This is true for 3D charcters, not for 2D that doesnt use modular animation. Btw, if you find it easy, go ahead and make your proposals. The devs should be happy to work with you if you don't ask too much. Good luck animating 1000 characters though.

1. Citation needed.

2. Citation needed.

3. Hahaha, no. They clearly have good sprite artists working on this game based on the quality of the sprites themselves. Which is why it is all the more perplexing.

Also, yes. It reminds me very much of the way South Park does it. You'd be blind to not see if it you are familiar with the show.
Ben Sep 19, 2016 @ 1:29pm
Citation needed ? wtf, those are simple and obvious facts... How old are you btw ?

Drawing a wonderful sprite and animating it are two totally different things. There are 1000 sprites. 1000. Can't you understand that even companies like Nintendo, Sony, Blizzard, Bethesda or w/e wouldn't animate 1000 pixel art characters ?

Comparing a game with a show just demonstrates your lack of knowledge concerning indie RPG games... There are so much of them using this kind of process, why didn't you just name them ?

w/e, i guess there's no point arguing with you at all. I answered your question, that should be enough. So... that's right, you win, the devs just made this choice to offend you. They had 200 artists working on the project but they all spent their time watching South Park 7d/7 instead of working. That's the only real explanation for this result.

Bye.

Hahaha. No you're gonna have to back those up with facts. Especially how " they want to provide a great amount of content, which is most of the time incompatible with gorgeous graphics and animations"...?

How the ♥♥♥♥ are the two incompatible?

You must have some kind of rare brain disease, I don't know... You can't understand how "high end production" and "high end content" are incompatible for an indie game dev ? I can't help you. Do you remember No Man's Sky ? It's not an old game. You may know it and that should help you understand those simple facts.

I reported you for your insults and I unsubscribed from this thread. Have fun answering to yourself.
Burusagi Sep 19, 2016 @ 1:46pm
You really think a walking animation is "high end"? Not only are you full of nothing but assumptions, but stupid assumptions to boot.

Also, way to call the kettle black, Mr. Pot.

You're reported as well. :)

This one character in pixel art doing a what most consider a simplistic animation, this is done in speed art so think you can wrap you're head around how long it takes to do them. Compared to 3Dgames where once you have model and skeleton you have the parents and childs and needed to do every animation with that model.

Another below of a monk combat.. As you can see it way more time consuming than you think OP.

The entire game was made by one guy, excluding the soundtrack. ONE. GUY.
Mog Hikarino Oct 2, 2016 @ 2:05am
The reason is ... oh the guy above already said it.

The whole game is made by 1 guy just 1, and if you don't like it just don't play it.

Also note that every sprite in-game is customizable. I don't mean "Oh we can change this guy's shirt color" but that every character, created or premade, can have a custom sprite given to them in the game's files. This means that even if the game's rather extensive character creator can't make what you want, you can do it pixel by pixel if you feel like it. Would that be possible with animations? Maybe. Would it be too tedious to be worthwhile? For me, absolutely.

This is without doubt the reason the sprites aren't animated.
