Feel free to use these two sprites in your own game if you'd like. I just have one request. Tell me what you think of them!
Lighting and shading come next, then I chose a color pallet and using the eraser tool I right click and replace the colors over the body as I need them.
After that, I add details and adjustments to try and match the sprites to others in the game.
[edit] I then use gimp to give them the transparent background they need and then save them as a PDF file.
I will borrow bits and pieces of existing sprites sometimes to try and further blend them into the art style of the game, but avoid making it obvious. Some tweaking is likely used.
This is just a simple explanation of my process, and probably not the easiest way to go about it, but it's how I go about it.
My latest sprite Bahamut didn't even use anything from the game, it was all heavily influenced and borrowed from Final Fantasy sprites. The body I drew, but everything else, head, wings, horns tail came from other sprites that already exist. The site The Spriters Resource[www.spriters-resource.com] has a useful page where most FF monster sprites are broken down to their parts, I used those.

I'll see if I can make a tutorial on how to make simple sprites for this game, but I'm still not skilled at drawing character sprites as small as they are here (I'm used to adding things like eyes, so tiny sprites where they don't show up is a new challenge for me) the monsters are more my speed.
