General rules:
-Always adjust taxes so you're around 100% happiness
-Expand to be able to have most buildings occupied at the same time
-Get more warehouses if your production is getting very high overall (but don't shy away from stopping it either) or get them when your resources aren't being delivered to you fast enough
General build order:
-Have forester/lumber mill/mine
-Have some basic food gathering (fisherman/hunter)
-Get marketplace asap - now you should be able to make money by selling and even a little from taxes as happiness will increase
-You should still have enough tools now to get a church and possibly a tavern, increasing tax income even more
-You might need to build your bread production line now, or if you have level 2 buildings, do that after you're done with the next step (just upgrade your fisherman/hunter)
-Build up your tools production line (will need more lumber production to sustain it)
-Now you should be able to expand in any area you want, though if you can, I recommend upgrading what you have (especially lumber/planks/ore/tools/food production)
-I would recommend getting a jousting ground and juice production, possibly beer (I'd leave cloth/jewelry production for the last because it's slow and consumes a lot of resources)
-You should be rolling in money right now
Of course in a scenario you will often have to adjust as necessary. Also leveling up and getting research is of high importance as it makes the process a lot faster (mainly because you will have a lot more money to spend).
Also, if you find yourself stuck and unable to do anything because of a lack of gold (mainly at the beginning of a mission and even more so on low levels), set your taxes to maximum (make sure you have some food stocks though at least) - your production will go to 50% but that doesn't matter. In 1 or 2 tax incomes, you should have enough money to build anything you need to progress.
