You need to get a sword from the guys that live in the mountains, then keep upgrading it by going to other mountain areas.

You get a bokken (can be looted from various enemies or bought at a sword market), and then, when confronting one of the masters, you'll have an option to show up late to the duel. Choose this option. You must defeat him while using the bokken, and then you'll unlock Miyamoto Musashi.

Bit late, but for anyone else looking in on this: Note that you cannot be sincere if you wish to do this or you won't have the option to go late and will instead arrive on time like the goody two-shoes you are.
