What I usually do is head over to that area. If not, I usually play trying to lead myself over to heights or higher ground areas to constantly be having a better overlook advantage often over being on normal leveled areas. With the overlook advantage I more than once was able to see over trees and bushes and instead, over to an obelisk!
Also, remember to always look forward and high! Hope that helps!

Also, once you find one, try to make a note of where it is because it will respawn in that spot again. Another thing is that if you're with a small amount of people, it's usually good to keep to the low lands if you want obelisks. Low lands will spawn the small obelisks mostly while the higher you go into the mountains, you'll find the skinny/tall ones and the large 6 man ones that require a larger herd to open.
