Deep in the Shadows: How to beat the boss?
I must have died at least 10 times to that flying umbrella lady. Maybe it's because this is my first soulslike that I'm playing through, but I find her ridiculously hard, even with using Living Weapon beforehand.

If it helps, my stats are Heart 13, Stamina 20, and Strength 10 (everything else is 5), I have B agility, and I'm running an Odachi build. I have some of the armor that protects against paralysis but I still get paralyzed and can't move. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Antiparalytic needles placed in a shortcut will instantly bring you out of paralysis.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's possible to beat her with your build but your specs suck.
New players would be better served getting all stats to 10 before doing anything else (not that you would have got them all to 10 by this point but they would be on their way), I fought her recently with a low level character and I think all my stats were roughly 8.

I can't remember exactly but I don't think you have any Onmyo or Ninjitu skill points when Magic and Dex are 5. The Ninjitsu skill Blinding Shell is the best skill you can purchase at your current level and is super useful against this boss. An elemental talisman from the Onmyo skill tree wouldn't go amiss either and if you had put any points in Magic then you could have a Resistance Talisman also, for Paralysis Resistance.

She is hard, it will take a while to learn her moves and openings and you will have to learn to time dodges (for her paralysis ray), she is mostly a question of how far away from her you should you be for any given attack that will allow you to exploit an opening when she finishes.

She is more than beatable with the Odachi but It also doesn't help that you are fighting one the fastest bosses in the game with the slowest weapon, if you had a more balanced build then you could have swapped weapons more easily.

Only use your living weapon to finish her off, if you need it, it's a waste if you start with it then die shortly afterwards

ETA: This is a thread from yesterday, regarding specs, you might find it useful.

I just loaded up a save with a level 23 character and fought her. It's a sword build but I equipped an Odachi for the fight (I have zero skill points spent in Odachi skills, though).

I did get hit occasionally but fought her exclusively in mid-stance (for better blocking), I only used strong attack once she had finished an attack, sometimes I could get two consecutive strong (mid-stance) hits in and sometimes she would be out of the way after the first one. I used no Magic or Ninjitsu, It wasn't that bad but I know how far to stand away from her.

When she gets her umbrella out, just get out of there.

Is it possible to respec my stats? I was following a guide for the Odachi build that emphasized Heart, Stamina, and Strength, which was why I put points in them.

As for Onmyo/Ninjutsu, I had 2 points of each. I put the Onmyo points in Weakness and Debilitator (the preceding one), and I put one Ninjutsu point in Shuriken.

I thought the Axe was the slowest? What can I use instead of the Odachi for this fight specifically?

Thanks for your help!
deeper Feb 1 @ 10:47pm
Oh yeah, the Axe, you're right about that, I've only used it in passing.

Yes, you can re-spec but I don't think you can do it mid-mission, only on the main map with a Book of Reincarnation, I'm sure the Blacksmith will sell one. Even with a re-spec, now, it would still be a tough fight.

All is not lost though, having just played her with the Odachi, it is more than possible, just stick to mid-stance strong attack (it's got a nice long reach and you don't have to get too close to her), hit her one or two (if you're lucky) times then back off a bit. The Odachi skills are quite slow and will leave you open to attack unless you know exactly when to use them. You haven't got many hit points, though, due to no Body investment.

I find her quite a relaxing fight these days but she is part of the games steep learning curve, take a break after a few deaths :)

Weakness is good and will help but you are probably better off just concentrating on melee and learning her move set until you know when best to use it. Possibly the best time to use it would be when she was low on health and your Living Weapon is available. With the Odachi Living Weapon, I find strong attack is best.

I did the same with Shuriken on my first play through, get rid of it when you re-spec.

And don't get me wrong, I love the Odachi, there's nothing wrong with it (well, it's got strengths and weaknesses, like any other weapon).

Just apply chaos on her (two different elemental effects on a same time)

Chaos is most common way to win in every boss fight, enemies under chaos takes +50% to direct damage and +50% to ki damage + under chaos effect they are staggered after yours every hit

And if I remember correctly she is vulnerable to lightning and has resistance to wind (make sense, she is flying creature after all)

There's nothing wrong with your stats, and there's no need to respec this early into the game. Right now you can just focus on putting points into stats that interest you, worry about respec later when you know exactly what you want.

You mentioned that you had shurikens and Weakness? You can try throwing a shuriken at her as soon as you spawn (and I mean spamming shuriken during the black screen so you'll throw a shuriken immediately as you spawn) and she'll lose all ki and fall to the ground. Use Weakness on her and start swinging that Odachi. Seriously, if you keep attacking she'll probably be out of ki for the rest of the fight. Whenever she gets airborne throw another shuriken and she'll fall to the ground again. If you don't have a shuriken, a bow can be used instead.

I'd recommend getting into the habit of switching to low stance whenever you want to dodge. It takes time getting used to, but it's worth trying to learn this as soon as possible as it'll make many encounters much easier to deal with if you can dodge faster. Whenever you want to attack, switch to medium/high, unless you want to use low for attack as well (you can do so for Hino-Enma if you want to).

If you have a kusarigama and the skill Reaper (costs 2 skill points; 1 if you already have Grapple) and use it on her after she's lost all her ki. It's a continuous attack so you need to repeatedly press heavy attack while holding down block to keep attacking until you're out of ki. Here's a video to get you an idea:

Okay, that makes sense. I keep forgetting to use low stance when I want to dodge, which eats up a ton if Ki (doesn't help that I use Odachi, which is very Ki-heavy). Also, what other weapon should I put my samurai points in? I'm putting them in Odachi so far according to Rakuyo's Odachi Build on the Nioh wiki, but I have a few extra saved up.

And I gotta get more needles.

Thank you all!
Guardian spirit talisman or moment talisman and certain spirits will instantly knock her down.

Update: I beat Hino-Enma with a much more even stat spread :D

As much I I like the Odachi, I used a Kusarigama instead because the specific one I have equipped gave 44% lightning damage.

Thank you all for your help!!!

Hello, maybe it's a bit late but to beat this boss, the best way is simply to learn her pattern, she is in fact really easy to dodge once you know some tricks.

For example, each time you start the fight she will always jump at you, you can dodge easily by running on the side, if you know some omnyo you should consider using weakness or sloth on her to help you during the fight.

When she start flying, just run around, she will probably send 1 to 3 times her paralysis attack before going for a dash toward you like she did at the beginning, you can likely punish her at this time too.

Finally, if you use a spirit like Kaito, if i remember correctly doing so in front of her will guardbreak her, meaning you are free to dps her during this time.

I know it's late, but if you continue the game it will never hurt to know this boss better !

Yeah, she was suuuper easy to dodge in low stance. I'm not that far yet, but I believe you have to beat another story mission before you can unlock Sloth, so at the time, I only had Weakness, which I used.
