The fight mechanic is really great.
You can play with a sword, dual sword, spear, tonfa, odachi, axe and kusarigama. You have bow and arrow, rifle, hand cannon, shurikens (throwing knives), bombs... and some magic too. There are a lot of armor sets, and they all have customizable effects.
There's also a Guardian Spirit. It imbues your weapon with an element, which gives you super power for a short time.
You can play solo or coop.
If you've never played a souls-like before, Nioh can be very hard in the beginning. 👍🏽
And if you playing dark Souls before it will be even more because you can't mindlessly do "big chanks make big bonks" playstyle that's worked in dark souls, here this style brings you only quick and painful death
Early game like 2nd boss can be really difficult. At least for me, since I'm being stubborn to wear starter armor for cosmetic reason in cutscenes. lol
I'm not going to lie, this game is going to punish you before it rewards you, while the mechanics to fight are simple, the complexity goes up the more you learn familiarity with weapons and unlock skills, this game is a slow and toxic grind, but the reward in my opinion pays for itself, I spent around 30 hours myself on the FIRST level, just going around, killing enemies until I had enough blue gear to FINALLY take down the boss solo, then again, I'm ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy and probably could have summoned a helper by offering a Ochako cup at the shrine, but I did not, I enjoy this game immensely, completed it several times, currently doing a Ninja playthrough which I'm limiting myself to the Kusarigama and twin-sword builds.
I give this game a solid 7/10, yes its going to kick your ass darksouls style, and not even in the good way, there's plenty of dangers that are going to one-shot you, but as long as you observe, learn and adapt, you will come through this game with a love for it, and hopefully the 2nd game as well despite it being mechanically different.
Didn't get into all the NG+ grind because I have other great games I want to play but I still got 50+ hours of solid fun from this game
It has a bunch of new mechanics that really change the combat quite a bit
You can use a lot of different yokai abilities and have a special parry + transformation that is more in-depth than the living weapon. But yeah it's still very similar to the first otherwise.
To be entirely fair, while almost true, the hammer/axe class weapons' high stance heavy attacks (sommersaulting double hit) can be spammed to win wights both against Yokai and human enemies as well; I once did a playthrough exclusively using that attack and had 0 issues on NG and veen NG+ as soon as I figured out how far exactly the attack reaches and when to attack the boss with it. It also EATS the ki of both humans and yokai, lol.
It started as a meme run to see how strong I can get the damage, then I literally bonked my way through the main game :D Was fun as hell tho. Paired with a hervy armor will make your ki deplete extremely fast, BUT will grant you the crucial def stat to tank through 1-2 hits from almost any boss, should they still hit you while in the attack animation.
