Story is servicable in both but less linear in Sekiro.
I like the combat in Sekiro better but it's still really good in Nioh, easily the best part of the game. In both games, it's snappy, responsive, and scales with player skill.
Sekiro is overall fairer than Nioh but in Nioh you can make up for that by getting levels or better gear. In Sekiro you can't stat grind. You still have ways to strengthen your character but not in the RPG/Diabloish way of Nioh.
Both can be tough and required of me to "get it" before they became more enjoyable and less frustrating than they initially felt.
Both are great in their own way.
Sekiro is just "enemy movement/attack learning" until it gets boring. In Nioh you also have the opportunity to get better weapon+stats (grind), if you need it.
Without spoiling anything, you can say that Nioh is a rather accurate depiction of feudal Japan's history (minus the mythological aspects which obviously make up the fictional parts of the plot) while Sekiro is a rather full on fiction. Nioh is somewhat cliché heavy (albeit enjoyable imo) while Sekiro fascinates with more mystery - typical From Software stuff.
Combat in Nioh is much more diverse but the actual damage balance seems very arbitrary. Sekiro honestly boils down to pattern memorization to its fullest extent: parry, parry, parry, take away one full bar once the meter is full. However, you could argue that all third person actiong games come down to this, including Nioh. But in Nioh you have much more room to breathe while being able to add a personal approach to your playstyle.
Sekiro is the harder game in the long run since Nioh allows you to go for cheese builds (I strongly recommend to not go for these builds since they trivialize any fight to the point of you only collecting loot. In the end, everyone should play however their heart desires.)
Nioh has much more longevity but can feel stale, if you do not enjoy Diabloesque grinds for loot.
In Nioh you select missions and get thrown into that linear level. Sekiro is open and interconnected just like the other recent From Software games.
They aren't really comparable since they share hardly any common aspects besides the setting and the most basic third person action traits.
Nioh 2 has Character Customization, pretty different system and gameplay wise, although both are pretty difficult 3rd Person Hardcore Action RPG's. Nioh 2 focuses more on the Diablo-esque looting, with an RPG system more akin to old-school games.
Nioh 2 can be pretty fun, very frustrating at times, so can Sekiro.
I'd say that you should pick what you are interested in, Nioh 2 is PS4 only, Nioh is a bit older (though from what I hear it is pretty good), and Sekiro is also a great option too.
I'd suggest picking up Sekiro on sale, or discounted if you're going to grab it.
Nioh does the job somehow, it has some redeeming qualities but it is unrefined, full of cheap stuff and re-used content ad nauseum. This game could have been 5 time smaller with the same amount of unique content and be better for it.
The bosses in Sekiro are light years away in term of design especially if you play them agressively. They feel very much alive with the way they react to your approach and be really intense if you stay in their faces.
A lot of bosses in Nioh are just whiff punish feast. If you love running around pocking the boss then run again you will love it I gess. I find that kind of gameplay boring. There are maybe a few nice ones but none are memorable.
The guard is also pretty stupid. It does reduce your ki so you have to manage that and some attacks go through it but it's a pretty lame mechanic overall. Doesn't matter where the attack come from. You keep the button down and even an arrow from the back will bounce of you like you are made of steel. The dodge on the other hand is seriously hazardous to use. Hitboxes are worse than dark souls 1 and the game punish you for using it most of the time. Again pretty lame IMO.
Oh this game drown you in loots too. Some people love that. Personnally I don't enjoy sorting out clutter.
If you want recommendations between Sekiro and Nioh 1, then I'd easily suggest Sekiro. If you are planning to go for Nioh 2 vs Sekiro, then it's more or less a draw (highly subjective utterance of my opinion). Nioh 2 is almost identical with minor additions and polish that makes it so much better than Nioh 1.
If money and, more importantly, time is not the issue, then get both since they both feel vastly different.
Sekiro excited me more since I deeply enjoy the From Software style, but Nioh I like better and play more.
Team Ninja polished this game like that toy-fixer guy from Toy Story 2. 90's and 00's kids know who I'm talking about.
I was able to do all this even before I decided what build I wanted to try. Sekiro cool, but that game got ya'll boys lookin' like a pretzel man until you start buying them skills.
I pre-order sekiro and I have 3 hours on that, The movement/combat sucks tbh. I don't feel it responsive enough. And the game sometimes wants to be hard "just because why not?", there isn’t a consistent difficulty like in Nioh 1, where even a random dude can make you his ♥♥♥♥♥ if you are not thinking.
