Was this game just miles harder/terribly balanced or...
...did i just not understand the games systems, because I've just finished nioh 2 and outside of the snake boss I rarely died. I thought the second game was really fun and the levels were good to navigate and complete whereas the first game was tedious and slow because everything two shotted you and the bosses had really high hp.

So was this just a problem with how i played or was this game just unfairly difficult?

I think I'm misunderstanding. Did you play Nioh 1 first, then Nioh 2? If yes, if you try to replay Nioh 1 from the start to see how you fare.

I think Nioh 1 is mostly many systems being thrown at the player at once. And then the little things that can help are often not thought or are missed.

Like the skills and equip jutsu is not explained until after you clear Isle of the Demons. Where some players may have figured it out, looked it up in advance, or other things the game throws a bit of help with, but may not explain or prompt the way Nioh 2 does.

e.g. Paralysis Omamori (spelling) and Anti-Paralytic Needles for Hino-Emma, the Lightning Omamori and the roof against Nue, lighting the fires and Water Omamori for Ume-bozu, etc.

I played nioh 1 first back in January. I just reinstalled the game to see what my character was like and honestly it was my fault, maybe not at the start (the ship boss was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hard for a starting boss) but later it definitely was.

I was maining a kusarigama and I, for whatever reason, had 55 points in dexterity despite being level 255. I had no idea how i managed to beat the game + dlc but I did.

I think the main problem with this game is like you said, it just throws so much information at you at once so i probably just skipped it because i hate all this stat nonsense.

I do think Nioh 2 is easier. I hated the first one by the end. The core combat is amazing, but all the systems and basically every enemy hitting like a truck. I think the biggest issue comes out when you fight smaller humanoid bosses and they have super fast Ninja Gaiden move sets that melt your HP in a couple hits. Like that stun locking bird lady or whatever who's the second boss I think. Stupid hard. Isn't the whole trade off of having a fast combo weapon that your hits do less damage? Anyway, Nioh 2 holds off quite a while before throwing any bosses like that at you.

Burst counter and those special moves, core skills or whatever they're called, gives you so much wiggle room compared to the first game. I've been able to clear most bosses in 1 try, and then retry ones in less than 10. I'm in area 3 now so maybe it'll get stupid, but so far it's been a lot smoother... but then again I'm also getting to play at 120fps which is another big game changer. Nioh 2 seems to give you way more health potions more consistently. One thing I just realized after going back to Nioh 1 (unless this can be achieved by unlocking a skill) is that ki pulse to purify an area required perfect ki pulse. In Nioh 2, it appears that any level of ki pulse purifies. So there's a lot of little things that add up to making it easier.

Nioh 1 is badly balanced imo. For a first time playthrough it is really difficult at the start, has a long easy midsection and then gets starts to level out at the end. If you keep going through to way of the nioh, the number of viable builds dwindles. Nioh 2 allows more variety, and doesnt have the same difficulty spikes. Having said that i prefer the level design of the first one, some of the levels in nioh 1 are truly inspired.

Waiting for a bigger sale than 20 percent on Nioh 2 to buy it. This game here is one of my favorites so the 2nd must be even better.

Having played both games I find Nioh 1 to be a hundred times easier than Nioh 2. Sloth, Extraction, Weakness, and Leeching talismans make the first Nioh much easier than the second.

Honestly. Nioh 2 is just balanced better and it does have way more options for the player than in Nioh 1. Though Nioh 1 breaks completely only at the NG+ modes. I'm currently playing on way of the wise (NG+++) and the amounts of damage the enemies deal is completely unfun (I get oneshotted, even with the bonus that reduces the damage by 40% at full health, sometimes). It's just unbalanced. I still enjoy this game alot actually, but sometimes it's frustrating as hell.
my nioh 1 logic: either git gud or farm amrita and lvl up till the level is bearable for you.
one good and safe way to farm amrita is co-op/online.
the "difficulty" in this game is terribly designed. see the mission Kanbei and the Overlord for the worst game design ever. Multiple enemies spawning out of nowhere that keep staggering you and you can't even find and focus them because the camera keeps going crazy.

They didn't have the skill to design a real challenging game like From Software so they chose to make it unfair. (one hit kills, staggering). Ninja Gaiden was known for this hence everybody stopped buying it. They panicked and started copying Dark Souls but still lack the talent to make good games.
