Weapon type tier list.
I was wondering what are the weapon types considered the best in NioH.

I've been having a lot of success with Odachi so far, but i have no idea what's good or bad later on. Seems like the tonfa is really weak in general.

So, what do you guys think are the best weapon types in the game in a list from 1 to 7?

I have had a lot of good results with the regular sword. The mastery skill that allows you to do almost double damage when behind an opponent is incredibly strong, almost OP.

My play style is to use the Sword & Odachi, with the Enko spirt which boosts ki damage, grapples, and finishers. If I empty my enemies KI they are pretty hopeless to avoid an instant kill.

The sword also has a lot of skills that do huge KI damage, good against humans as well as yokai bosses so you can stagger them often.

I heard the spear is really safe and strong but i've never used it. Dual swords are good.

From what I remember, and this is my personal experience, it was the Kurasarigama (May have spelled that wrong). Specially if you were big into the whole Ninja tools and such. My entire build (played on the PS4 when it came out) was all about the Ninja tools, pretty sure I got it to the point where I was able to 3 shot the final bosses on Way of the Demon. As for a list, my personal list would be....
1. Kurasarigama
2. Dual Katana
3. Spear
4. Tonfa
5. Katana
6. Odachi
7. Axe
I don't like slow weapons so they are automatically on the lowest of my list but I've seen people do well with them and I've seen people do terribly with them but never really thought, after getting help and they used one of them, wow, that guy was helpful. Was mostly, man...really wish they didn't use those. This is for my playstyle so someone else may say otherwise.

The tiering of weapons changes as patches come out, so I've no idea if anything I say is current. Kusarigama and dual swords tend to be regarded as god-tier easy mode weapons, apparently their damage output is monstrous relative to other weapons. After that people tend to rate the sword rather well. Most people don't think too highly of the spear or axe though (though the spear is a nice safe weapon I found).

As for the DLC weapons (odachi and tonfa), I've not seen much discussion of them. Odachi apparently started out poor at release but was improved in a patch, though I hear its dps isn't the greatest (that said, I'm maining an odachi and I love its safe and versatile moveset). And nobody even uses tonfa apparently, so either they're crap or just neglected.

All weapons seem to be perfectly viable though, it's largely a matter of taste. Most people seem to love the single sword, but I hated it and couldn't get the hang of it (I'll probably try again later of course, now that I'm a whole lot better at the game).

I would like to try dual swords, but seems like they suffer a lot dealing with humanoid opponents that blocks?

Also, DMG from behind with the regular sword is insane indeed, but i always find a lot of trouble hitting the back of an enemy consistently. Are there any tricks for it?

I'm using the spear now and it has some really powerful combos, but i'm struggling with it compared with the odachi.

there afew moves with duel swords that put you behind a target once u block its attacks leaving them open for some slicing.

Literally just timing, I thought that people just used certain moves but its just learning the patterns and then dominating them when you can.

I'm used to obliterate revenants with the Odachi, i guess that is why it gets harder with other weapons.

Guess i'll try dual swords, but i'm currently in Todo clan using heavy armor at level 140, and when i move out of a strenght based weapon, the damage is usually low due to the lack of points to invest in other stats if i want to wear heavy armor with a B rating.

Tonfa master race, set people to burn/ paralyze in 3 hit. Not to mention that the weapon also fast as hell

respec with a book , you can buy them if you dont have one.
As for weapons , Tonfa i find is by far the most skill based weapon and thus most enjoyable. If you want easy mode go odachi, or kurisarlgama.

Maining Kurasarigama
2nd Weapon is Sword (Katana)

that said initially I started as Kurasarigama/Tonfa since before I even looked at stats I planned to use those 2 weapons as a ninja

unfortunately Iga Jonin armor set is a 7 piece set and one of those pieces requires a sword... so I ditched the Tonfas which I really enjoyed.

I been practicing with the katana now though and getting a knack for the parries ( both water shadow and backwave/tempest) which while fun I still wish I had my tonfas :p

Even then 95% of enemies I fight with the Kurasarigama.

High stance quick attack combo chews through revenants and if they block the combo going straight into crimson furry tends to be enough to just break their guard from the intense attack barrage

I really hate the 7 piece armor sets. Especailly the ones that use up both your melee weapon slots.

the bonuses are so good though. I'd switch to Sasuke's armor set (digging the gunstick tonfas he uses in his fight) but his set bonuses don't benefit me like the Iga Jonin do.

Think there is an accessory that you can get that lowers the amount you need for a set, just find that then you can keep your weapon if you'd like.
awanderingswordsman Nov 17, 2017 @ 12:36am
The accessory is the yasakani magatama and it does indeed lower set reqs by 1 (meaning you could technically have 9 two piece sets).

From various research odachi and kusa living weapons tend to be regarded very highly and that was most of what high end stuff was about. I think odachi's main issue is not having any good stam draining punishes like dual swords have with the high stance slash until you run out of stam move but you can always just carry a secondary for punishing zero ki yokai bosses. Mid stance heavy>heavy>light(the one that goes into high stance)>heavy is really good damage though.
ZoSo Nov 17, 2017 @ 12:39am
What you mean Odachi doesn't have good punishes for drained yokai?
