Finally beat Hino-enma
Might not sound like a great achievement to the veterans of the game, but this thing took ~1hour to beat and that was a relief. Especially after she did her kissing attack at low hp. :lunar2019shockedpig: I read on Reddit that she's in the middle of the difficulty spectrum. Wondering who's gonna be harder.

Edit: Now that I'm almost at the end of main game I think I misjudged her difficulty due to inexperience with this game and general rustiness not playing any difficult games for a few months. The only boss who made me struggle was the real Tachibana (duel version). At that point I barely had recommended level/gear and no ninja/onmyo skill points invested. Needless to say, it took a while.

Congrats!
Yeah, Hino is one of the easier bosses, but for a fresh playthrough for the first time, I think she's the hardest. By the time you get to the tougher bosses, you should have a very wide set of tools for dealing with them. But Hino is the first real boss they throw at you, and you generally at this point have NOTHING to deal with the crap she demands of you.

All her attacks inflict paralysis. By this point you've barely even met enemies that do elemental attacks or status ailments, and here's a boss that inflicts the deadliest status ailment in the game. if you're lucky the game gives you like 3 paralyzing needles to deal with this.

Plus, you have none of the skills necessary to capitalize on her openings. It's easy to say stuff like, "When she's flying, just shoot her." Ya, with what ammo?

So I get it. Really, the toughest thing about her is that when you first meet her, you don't have the tools to deal with her. Later though, she'll be a cakewalk. Trust me.

I haven't played the game for a couple months and had to reacquire my fighting style not to mention learn to play on keyboard instead of controller, cause the usb jack on it broke (not because of this game). I did the same mistake playing DS3, pausing play-through for some time with only 2 main game bosses left to beat. I found a lot of anti-paralysis gear just farming easy enemies and then spent several tries just re-learning her attack patterns without using any elixirs. Then I saw my opening and committed to it. So far enjoying the game and barely any rage moments. Just beat the Nue boss as well.

A lot of the bosses make a mess of the fighting you have learned to use anywhere else in the game. Add on their huge health bars and strong attacks and a lot of bosses will slow you down if not make you fight them multiple times to get it right.

There are some nasty DLC bosses, but honestly few things in the main game get significantly tougher than Hino. I'd say if you can beat her, you can beat the rest of the game. Enjoy! It's one of my favorite games, period.

I have to agree, just got done with Tachibana in the side mission and he made earlier bosses look like nothing.

I just beat the game and Hino was by far the hardest. Most of the other bosses i 1 shot. Theres a few other semi difficult ones, but nothing was even close to as hard as hino on a first playthrough.

So congrats!

Is it weird that I beat her on my second try? and the first one I was extremely close to killing her (she had like 5HP) but I did a slight misstep and died, second try though and I won.

Like she was one of the easiest bosses next to the one which comes after her.

Hino-enma is a hard boss if you haven't played a game like this before. She's honestly a pretty good skill gate, teaching you the exact opposite lessons of Onryoki. Where Onryoki is slow, she is fast. Where his arena is cramped with fire hazards, hers is one of the biggest boss rooms in the game, and has no obstacles to speak of. Where Onryoki is just a big, beefy, straightforward fight that rewards aggression, Hino-enma is tricksy, status-ailment inducing, and rewards careful dodging with attacks of opportunity.

TLDR: Hino-enma is a good boss, and offers an exact opposite contrast to Onryoki. Between the two of them is the spectrum that most bosses in the game fall under.

Good job, Jar Jar! Keep it up, and don't be afraid to summon a visitor from the shrine! Most of us are fairly helpful, and enjoy this game enough to want to help a friend out ^_^

Not weird, I know these games are different for everyone and bosses who are difficult to someone are easy to someone else. For example, many people say DS3 Aldrich is super hard and I got him on the 1st try. Anyway, I looked at amrita memories screen and it says i got Hino on my 14th attempt. I think that's decent.

I played Dark Souls 3, the Surge and LOtF and that is probably part of my problem. I realized this game requires me to unlearn what I already know in this genre.

While it would be fun to play coop I really want to beat every boss solo even if it takes an embarrassing amount of tries (thanks side mission Tachibana).

Now what I could use some help with is the ninjutsu and magic recommendations. I haven't spent any skill points yet and beat early bosses including Centipede so far using only old fashioned sword swinging. I think I need to expand my tool set.

Just wrote up a nice long reply to you, and then Steam ate my message ^_^

Here's a quick sumup while I go punch a pillow or something:

Ninjutsu:

Quick Change Scrolls, Shuriken, Power Pills

Onmyo:

Weakness Talisman, Sloth Talisman, Kekkai Talisman, Elemental bolts, Guardian Spirit Talisman

Keep up the good patience and you'll hopefully discover the amazing combat system that makes this game one of my favorites of all time. Happy Hunting!

Remember everyone, the higher your damage output, the less time theboss battle will take, that means less chances to screew up. Building your character, to be capable to dish out big amount of damage as fast as possible will allow you to capitalaze on enemy opening more.

Wait till you see Maria lol. Hino Enma ain't easy early game, good work.

I kind of am starting to feel like this is the worst of the souls-like games. Maybe, it is just that I prefer the Dark Souls combat better, but this is just an annoying game. I shouldn't have to spend several hours trying to beat the same damn boss.

That is oposite for me actually. I found Dark Souls boring, and each boss takes forever to beat. While Nioh is extremely fast. And similar to the DS, in Nioh you can build yourself to pretty much LW burst enemy to death.
