Parrying and Defensive blocking abiltiies... Need some help/tips
So, I've had this game for awhile, but most likely gonna start a new fresh game to get back in to the habbit of things (current game I am fighting the huge water boss.) I've always been a player that likes to play between offensive and defensive play. I was never in to the 'Souls-style-sque games until I got Nioh (however I do know Nioh, is much more different, as I got it because I enjoy Japanese stories/lore...etc)

So, I'm trying to understand how to do Blocks/Perries/Counters, every tutorial I've seen on youtube directs this wrong and I am trying to get these crucial arts down (to not only look...cool? ) but to be able to have a good defensive play (besides dodging) attacks, so that after a defensive move, I can switch to an offensive play style, and back when needed.

Any advice? :D

Block is simply block. Hold shift. Xd

Parry can be done in 2 ways, and also can be called counter attack if u did it using 2 skills from the sword skill set.

Parry normal move is when u time your block before an enemy attacks making them stagger ( p.s not every attack can be parried ) another thing is that with human enemies after u time pressing shift (parry) and stagger them, press shift again and u will knock them on the ground and able to do final blow, really good strategy to finish human enemies.

There are other 2 skills who do the counter attack, yet work as parry, haze and something else iirc, but they really weren't my thing to waste a skill slot on them.

Parry as a stat actually refers to how much ki taking hits from blocking spends.

Parry as a skill refers to skills that deflect the enemies attacks while attacking. This doesn’t always have a cool grab animation. Sword has haze, duals have the shrike, spear has twirl, odachi has cookoos call, ect.

Then there is timely guard. Timely guard is when you block the instant before an enemy attack lands and it will make a noise telling you when youve done one. Some weapons even have a ki burst that knocks the enemy back. Sword and Tonfas are the only weapons that have a timely guard special counter attack. Kusarigama has the ki burst but no counter. Spear has neither. I’m unsure about the rest.

The parry counters like haze and the shrike do not count as grappled.

But if you’re more into the speculator fighter component (ie: looking cool), sword is probably gonna be your favorite. Tonfa is really cool too. Spear can be if you use the fluidity mystic art but it’s hard to use since the Spears best attacks lock you into long animations.

Thanks for the advice, but I was actually speaking on block parrying. :) I have watched some videos, however I still can't grasp how to do them no matter how many times I watch the video to get some visual cue/clue on how to do said abilities. :D

After some trial and error, I was finally able to get the concept of getting blocking parries down. Took me about 2 hours of practice, but worth it. :D
