That first boss was a pain in the butt until I realized the game is trying to teach me how to Burst Counter. After that it became pretty simple. You can really lock him in place with that.
Edit: I just remembered I was using magic on that first boss fight. I guess it doesn`t count.
I`m such a scrub. I just love those Barrier talismans. If I remember right it is the same thing as a Kekkai talisman from the first game. Incredibly useful in Nioh 2. They allow you to pretty much ignore Yokai realm/Dark realm stuff. Even more useful if you are using heavy armor with C agility. They also affect any teammates you have with you. Pretty sweet if everyone has them and we take turns using them. Ki management becomes a non-issue.
They already nerfed Dark Realms to a point now I don't even feel a thing. As you can see in the video, I don't even need to flux that much. Burst Counter should recover a ton of Ki.
Also, yeah, Rumbling Earth, Bear's Bane of Axe deal a ton of Ki, AI doesn't like those moves. They often stand still "taking the throw" 4Head.
