But now... oh the fun. I'm playing my second character because I was getting borred with my main.
So, are you done? Or, perhaps, you're ready for advise / help?
This game has probably the most complex combat mechanics of any souls-like. Which to me is the most rewarding part. When you pick up some Tonfas and rock Kelley out with a 100+ hit combo and finish him off with a grapple roundhouse to the throat, I want to stand up and cheer... I still get frustrated sometimes, sure. But that just drives me to storm back into the boss room with furious vengeance and hulk out!
There is much knowledge of the game within the community and unlike the DS community, we won’t berate you with “git gud skrub “ comments, so if you wanna have another crack at it, we’re more than happy to help with advice or co-op.
So, what weapons do you enjoy using the most? I’d be happy to help you put together a build. I’ve ran builds for every weapon except spear.
Ps: also, DLC difficulty scaling is weird. NG dlc missions are actually NG+ scaling. You’re not really “supposed” to go into the dlc without having first gotten to the end of NG+. They implemented the dlc with the expectation that most players were already vested in at least NG+. Plus the DLC gear sets are better overall, so it’s also a means to keep players from being OP in their next playthrough.. however, the mission Sanada’s Resolve is a great mission for farming gear. The elite humans and their revnants are easy to cheese and drop good stuff.
Be foxy, be sneaky and let no enemy touch your head.
All of my armor except legs is ethereal with a 3p set bonus from vassal with a magamata accessory bonus. I have 24B, 30Stam, 99Heart, 38str, 99 skill, 39 dex, 25magic, 34 spirit.
I have read that putting the proper skills on weapons and attributes matters however, I don't want to make the same mistake I did last time by wasting tons of money just to upgrade a weapon or change it out with a better drop soon. I have been rushing hundred eyes so I can reach WOTN so as to farm levels/gear from that first area.
Understand this before any advice is given though. I absolutely refuse to grind for days at this point to achieve any further success in Nioh. I am done with that garbage. If its the build that is holding me back or something easy like you said. Great. I'm all for changing up my point of attack with some new knowledge but grinding...will not be it.
Thanks guys,
P.S. I am sure i also need to still git gud but thats always a given anytime
if Katana is your main, then heart will be your main stat, then skill, then strength. Make sure you have enough spirit to get all the bonuses for the guardian spirit. 30 spirit is a good place to start. (guardian spirit Kato is the best spirit in the game. Use him! Secondary doesn't really matter, but I like Bisha Centipede a lot cause of the pierce)
ALL weapons should have familiarity damage bonus and close combat damage. You will want to put Change to Attack (heart) on your sword once you get one that is worth reforging (use umbracite to get the attributes. reforging via random rolls is super expensive).Weaken Melee Weapons makes life a lot easier as well.
Your side-weapon can be anything really, but with speccing mainly into heart/skill/strength, the dual swords will benefit the most.
for ninjutsu, make sure to grab Quick Change scroll. It will save you countless headaches. For Onmyo magic get carnage talisman, steel talisman, kekkai, and rejuvination. When using carnage/steel, use them in that order. carnage first, then steel. the carnage talisman gives you a defence debuff, but the steel gives you a defense butt that completely overwrites it.
Those are the quickest and easiest changes. I could go further into it, but I don't really recomment reforging and min/maxing until you're starting to get lvl 300 gear.
Don’t want to grind? Always short on gold because spending it all on upgrades? There are many ways to skin the cat, I’m sure, though I can’t picture other builds than the one I’m using right now, coffee hasn’t kicked in yet, imagination still asleep.
I’m running kunai spammer build, which is completely gear level / weapons rarity free, meaning I don’t have to upgrade, my damage wouldn’t get any better whether my weapons are lvl 300+ ethereals or lowly lvl 150 divines, heck, I've killed Maria on WoTN under 7 seconds still mostly in ~lvl 200 divines and waaay underleveled. This means I sell most of my drops. This means gold. When I feel like it, I move to new gear, I don’t upgrade often; move, because all important stuff is in inheritables. What I do now is when I find or forge armor piece with good star effect, I take it to Abyss, defile it, 4 bosses later, some temper and soulmatch from my original piece, I’ve new shiny already fully upgraded.
Lemme know if you’re interested. If you're afraid, you could make a copy of your save and come back to it in case this doesn't work for you.
(I hope I don't sound pushy like door-to-door-salesmen...)
I'm at late endgame (abyss floor 630-ish) and I am always tweaking my build and I spend stupid amount of gold. (spending over 50 mil per reforge session) and I never grind gold. I havent grinded gold since before going into the abyss.
but yeah, like he said, it's definitely worth a shot switching weapons up. I've ran everything but spear and my enjoyment varies greatly depending on my setup. My least favorite build was dual sword/odachi (the odachi was useless, it was a stat stick). but some folks love dual swords. I didn't much care for sword personally, but just an opinion. Tonfa is my current favorite, but the learning curve is high cause leader of the ten braves rewards A agility, so I'm not quite so used to being this squishy yet.
Or if you want to transcend into godhood, just start collecting Intentions of a Gallant Warrior set and build for LW lol.
Also, don't be afraid to check youtube for builds.
If you like swords, check this build out:

If only he had a better GS summon, then I'd call him my bestie.
If Kato had something half as awesome as Nine-tails I'd be happy. Even matching Paired Raiken would be wonderful.
