Whenever you make an attack, you'll notice that little blue particles jump out around you. They hang in the air for a moment, then start moving towards you. If you press the Ki Pulse/Stance button (Right Bumper by default on controller) right at their maximum distance from you, you get a bonus Ki return, and increased Ki Recovery Speed for a few seconds.
In addition, performing a Ki Pulse inside a Yokai Realm (the grey foggy zones that Yokai leave behind), you Purify it, removing the pool.
There are several bonsuses you'll unlock that trigger on performing a succesful Ki Pulse/Purification, and it lets you keep effectively infinite Ki to continue your combos and keep you from the exhausted state when you run out of Ki.
An easier way of telling when to press the Ki Pulse button is to keep an eye on your Ki bar (below Health). When you make an attack, the bar decreases, but leaves an "afterimage" behind of the ki you've used. When you stop moving after an attack, there is a semi-transparent bar that fills much more quickly than your Ki. Once that bar hits the top of the "afterimage", it's time to hit the Ki Pulse button.
This all sounds hugely convuluted and painful, but I promise you it isn't! You'll eventually be doing these subconciously, and not even realize it until someone points it out to you.
