true. but Nioh is brutal early on. Then later as you refine your build it feels a lot more fair as you have better defenses against he most infuriating parts of bosses :P
That and heavy armour means mistakes don't mean insta death!. well mostly :P but by the time you get to ng++++ the boss patterns are second nature to you and you die a lot less except the damn raindeer antler head man who is just straight up annoying :P I'm sure other people hat different bosses though :P
Yes, it's easy to evade/dodge boss attacks but if you don't get good hits, you could be dodging all night and not complete the mission. This is why there's less incentive for me to defeat the same bosses over and over again, and get killed same number of times like when I first started - especially with human bosses who use LW constantly - which also means you can't stagger them or they recover ki within a second literally :/
After struggling a lot with wotd I beaten hyakki yakko mission on first try.
Bosses die quickly.
This, i was very weak when i first did that level, i shot him with the hand cannon about 5 or 7 times, he died.
Heck, I died to White Tiger 6 or 7 times before I finally got lucky with my LW. The previous boss, Nohime, was even worse; I lost track of how many times she killed me before I got her.
Nioh is a _hard_ game! Hard games don't mean "you can beat on your first try if you were born under a lucky star", they mean "if you keep at it and don't let the oppressive weight of your own bodies and spilt blood tear you down, you'll master the mechanics and earn those victories."
And the victories are SOOOO satisfying when they finally come!
I used to abhor Shigezane (in his first form), he would obliterate me, and I just managed to earn the Date Shigezane Crusher title cheese-free on Way of the Nioh with zero items or jutsu used (apart from catwalking / suppa to get to him without fighting other things).
Its more:
try half a dozen times to learn any sort of movesets.. Dying repeatedly in one or two attacks, and learning almost nothing.. Finally giving in, and watching a darn youtube video, JUST so I can see his moves..Fight several more times.. Become extremely frustrated.. ANd when I finally win, feel like I cheated for watching a video.. Or, still unable to beat it, and reorting to crap tactics with ranged abilities, and caltrops..
Even wearing the best available armor, 2 hits from most bosses is about all I can take.. the first usually stuns long enough for the followup.. Most of them have devastating combos.. Most recently, the white tiger.. That ice Queen was rough as well, but she felt manageable.. The larger ones seem to hit me during dodges no matter what I do.. I cant seem to get a handle on the hit boxes, and strike zones. Im finding the difficulty spikes to be extremely bipolar!
I really recommend spending a lot of time just running and watching the bosses, without even trying to deal damage at first. Often step 1 is just learning how not to get hit - so even if you deal no damage, try to stay alive for longer and longer periods of time. Some bosses have certain kinds of gimmicks. For example, one boss is devastating at medium range but actually cannot hit you if you're close enough, while another can absolutely devastate you at close range but will run around and whiff if you keep them at medium range. Still others are able to deal damage when you're in front or to the rear, but have a lot of trouble if you're beside them.
And yes, you will die. A LOT. I mentioned I just had a perfect run of a boss. In all the various places I've fought him, that was my 11th kill of him, and I've had 58 total deaths to him. (This particular boss has 2 forms and the stats sum both together; I think this was my 6th kill of that form. Most of the deaths were against this form as well).
For me, anyway, progress at learning a boss comes in spurts. I'll have periods where I just feel like I'm not getting any better, and I'm just wasting my time trying over and over again, and then things will gel and I'll rapidly improve, usually by changing strategy when I see patterns to my defeats.
on the plus side.. Im excited to jump back into The Surge after Nioh.. That one had very crisp combat, and movement, while still feeling momentum, and weight in both! Just too few bosses.. I tried Salt & Sanctuary, but.. Woof! That combat did not do it for me..
