I don't really use them, but from what I hear, they're pretty dope in the late game.
For late-game odachi, there is one that's part of a well-respected set (Seven Misfortunes, Eight Hardships) and the really good non-set odachi like the taro tachi can be defiled in the Abyss to make it part of a Grace set, which can be even more useful.
Unfortunately though, odachi doesn't get much love in terms of set bonuses specifically for the odachi or odachi skills. Like master swordsman 4 piece gives +30% dmg to the best dual sword skill, sign of the cross. It's not a deal breaker, but it would be nice.
Odachi scales best with strength but it's second best scaling stat is stamina, which is a shame cause if you plan on getting the most out of your odachi build, then maxing strength and stamina is how you do that, which that pretty much automatically signs you up for axe secondary if you want max usefulness. But on the flipside, A agility becomes possible with heavier gear.
Bear in mind, none of this is necessary. But players at endgane tend to want to maximize their character.
I dunno, I use an odachi secondary purely for the 7 misfortunes set bonus and I pull it out for its break sometimes. I have mine built for ki dmg cause it has no hope of getting as high of damage as my dual swords.
