I've not tried melee ki damage or ranged weapons but I think you'd still want to be a bit of a mage for them to work - spear / kusarigama I think is a good pair for melee, or maybe replace spear with hammer for blocking humans.
I have Close combat Ki damage on every weapons. It can rekt bosses pretty fast in WotN even with low damage.
Mixing this with Izanagi /' Izanami for damage boost
Problem with my onmyo character is that she (me) kept using talismans like machine gun lol so will try on melee :)

have not tried this yet - this is just a template, work in progress. I need kusarigama with winter dawn star skill, redo stats and I think maxing melee mastery isn't needed so gonna spec in all weapons - I think all weapons have a ki damage skill. There's also clan shopping, but at first glance there's only one that has damage to enemies with zero ki or something, so Kuroda looks like that's it for now.
The problem with above is that ki damage is a hidden weapon property and I'm pretty sure it's static too - might take long time testing various weapons / skills vs yokai and then humans. Not sure yet if I'm up for this.
I played with that set a while back and I didn't like it as Tactician's Ingenuity. The problem is Strategist of Legend has very high skill ki damage but ki damage of quick attack is pretty weak. Correct me If I'm wrong.
I honestly prefer Close Combat Ki damage because it applies to both quick attack and skill attack so I can mix up evasion attack + dash attack with skill.
My idea was: ki damage on white / no effects weapon is a hidden property, same as base damage. Let's say it's 100 on kusarigama. If I'd go with Tactician CC Ki damage build, I could get additional ~30%. So instead of 100 damage to ki with quick attack or strong attack, I'd be doing 130 (260 with Winter Dawn and maybe 20% more if I'd go for Shooting Star MA - but I'd have to say goodbye to Reaper and Blade Spin!). On the other hand, if I could increase damage of certain, specialized on ki damage skills like say shove that even without Skill Ki damage bonuses could deplete enemy's Ki and then try and use these skills I will be golden.
And as you can see in my stats I do have 11.9% CC Ki damage there, so I'm not without.
