If you like swords, luckily for you, most sets support swords/ katanas. You don't have to worry not having decent sets from the beginning.
You should aim for the Dragon Ninja sets if you prefer melee, or Iga sets if you prefer using ninjitsu items.
Most people don't wear full sets, instead they combine multiple sets to stack damage bonus from sets using Yasakani Magatama.
There are also Ethereal sets that turn none set items into sets in NG+++ and beyond. You can decide which sets and combinations best suit your build.
Yes, but you can't start dojo mission without required stats.
I don't think you should go 30 dex at the start, just put points into where you need them as you go, with dex being above the others. Ninja dojo missions unlock as you do first main missions in new regions, so maybe have 10 dex first one, then 15 dex for the next region, and 20 dex for the next. You don't have to go straight 30 dex right away, but eventually get there. Instead put some in spirit for guardian spirit bonuses, put minimun into magic to get some omyo abilites and do omyo missions at the dojo.
I started out choosing ninja build with dual swords as main and kusarigama as secondary, throwing all my points into Skill and Dex, but eventually ended up putting points into everything.
Focus on your main damage stat while increasing stamina to wear some armour heavy enough to reach 200 toughness.
Invest some into Dex and Magic.
Dex needed for kick-ass Ninjutsu skills: Ninja-Tool-Mastery, Medicine-Man, Quick-Change, Tiger-Running, and Enlighment... then optionally Suppa and Cat-Walking.
Magic needed for demon-ass Onmyo skills: Sloth!!!, Weakness!!, Steel and Protection (or either one--depending on play-style), Awakening... then Guardian Spirit, Pleiades, Extraction... theeen much later in the game Carnage and friends when you want to aim for that 1 million 1 shot Iai Quickdraw or whatever.
- Just pick whatever weapon you have a natural affinity and feels like it works with you well. Look at that weapon and see what it's main scaling stat is as mentioned above, Usually Heart B+, or Dex B+ etc. whatever is the B+ is the main stat. Put your points into that so you can hit harder and kill things.
- Second put points into spirit til 12-13 and use Kato, this gives you a nice damage boost early on and can use living weapon for tough spots.
- Honestly once you get in the grove you get so many skills points and amrita that it doesn't matter. I know you want to min/max early on but really just do whatever to wear the gear you want and more damage. You get like a dozen reset stat/skill scrolls for free throughout the game and you can buy them from merchant. So never feel stuck or "omg I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ my character up". It's never permanent you're good. Just get past the 3rd map. 4th Map and onward the game really opens up and has amazing design. It's just annoying they give you that Poison centipead map and water docks map so early as they're easily the most annoying maps in the game and the rest are a pure joy to explore and run through.
- TLDR: I stressed a lot trying to find perfect build and use kusaragama to get through the NG and was just annoyed. So found a bad ass sword, started doing whatever I wanted got skills and got past first few maps and started loving the game. My enthusiasm got my friends interested and then we stareted cooping and just enjoying the hell out of the game and NG++++ now 240+ hours in the game. I also suggest changing weapons everytime you start NG+ keeps things fresh. GL HF
