Sword symbols
I have a "Bizen Osafune" and the icon is a sword with the hilt on the top right and the blade pointing down left and a "Hshikiri Hasebe" where the hilt is on the bottom right and the blade points to the top left. Both have heart, strength and skill as modifiers.

What is the difference between those classes? Why do they have different icons?
Would they both fall under the "sword" category when starting a new game?

Isn't one of those an odachi?

No they are both roughly the same lenght, and odachi uses Stamina, aaaand the odachi symbol is different(it has a really long hilt)

they are both single handed katanas, my theory is that the ones with set bonus are titled differently than the other, im not sure though

I´ll keep an eye out to see if it is the fact that they are set items but I thought set items only had different names, not symbols.

Btw one sword is more curved than the other, I wonder if those are different weapon types IRL?
Aren´t there tons of history/Japan nerds here? ^^

Not sure about the history of them or anything but in-game they are both different types of swords. The same thing is going on with axes having hammers as a variant, but the difference is better communicated there.

Basically they're both swords, but each one has different focuses in stats. The downwards icon swords have better skill scaling and blocking power while the upwards icon swords have better strength scaling and guard-breaking.

The reason there are two symbols indicating katanas is because of historical facts.

Blade pointing downward is Uchigatana

Blade pointing upward is Tachi

They are both weapons classified as katanas.

The name of the blades and the types of katanas are mostly accurate in Nioh, including Dual Swords and spears.

Didn't know they have different skill/strength scaling and block/guard breaking abilities.

I just use the different symbols as a hint to what a revenant may have from their grave icons. I pretty much kill every rev I see with the blade pointing up symbol in hopes they're carrying the Dragon Sword.
