My thoughts: Axes and Hammers.
This probably will be an unpopular opinion but quite honestly they aren't that bad. The high stance quick attack combo ended with the strong attack is actually very devastating against large yokai enemies that are under the confusion and saturated. Include in that the sloth talisman and weakness talisman and the skill passive that your axe attacks deal more damage against Yokai.

And you will have your hands on one of the most devastating amounts of damage available. Enemies I recommend using this combo against are: all of the Yokis, One eyed Onis, Onyodos, Onryoki, Joro-Gumo and Nue. Why these? They have the lowest amount of mobility and very large hit boxes (Well Joro-Gumo is semi agile but very easy to stun lock especially with the confusion on)

I am currently doing way of the wise and I have been using the Tatewari Axe for a while and I honestly can not hate axes and hammers. They are good but they are just much more different compared to other weapons on how they are used. Sadly yes I couldn't get Earth damage on my Tatewari axe so I could just face roll all of the yokai with my water damage Ishida Masamune and earth damage Tatewari Axe.

I do admit that axes and hammers are... Under powered compared to other weapons but they are fully capable to go around and the amount of break you can have with these weapons are terrifying just remember one thing. Dodge or evade attacks instead of blocking because that is very quick way to loose all of your Ki.

Can I recommend it against Ogress and Giant Toad. Giant Toad is a huge question mark for me because you will need to keep the sloth talisman and electric damage on your axe all the time because in way of the wise he has very broken AoE downwards thrust attack and his version of tornado that you will want to only do quick attacks.

Ogress can not be slowed down with electric and she is only weak against Earth, Water and maybe Wind. Thing is she has huge frontal hitbox so when you slap her with the confusion she is going to take A LOT OF DAMAGE especially when you have the saturated status effect too. So in general Axes and Hammers are pretty much designated anti Yokai weaponry so it might come handy of you packing one with you in the twilight missions.

What about Umi-Bozu? Problem is the very slow attacks and charged attacks of Axes and hammers... Just sucking so bad that I honestly can't recommend it because that boss is very well known for giving you 3000 pressure shower for you out of nowhere and quite honestly just fully charged Iai slashing him or using Odachi is much more recommendable.

None of the weapons are bad because the game has headshots and spells. There's always a way to do massive dps no matter what weapon you're using.

I`ve got over 1,500 hours on the PS4 version and 99 percent of my time was using the axe. I never had any trouble using it. Anyone who says the axe sucks is speaking from inexperience. They just don`t know how to use it. Also lets not forget the Living Weapon axe spin. One of the best cheeses in the game. I don`t normally use it since it can be too high risk but it`s a nice option to have. I could go on but I`ll leave it at that.

Kaido axe and the big red axe are my weapons of choice. Don`t remember what big red is called but I`m sure you know the one. It`s nice because you can put a Grace on it. Never had much use for the hammers. They do have a higher break stat compared to the axes but that doesn`t mean much on the harder difficulties.
