As lester stated, there's a transmutation feature which allows you to change the appearance of an item while keeping the stats, so when you find a new piece of gear with better stats you can change the appearance to your liking.
still good tho. you can make cool looks and there is some weird stuff lol. fashion souls for life tho
And with the option to reskin armor, you get the best of both worlds since you don't have to sacrifice stats for style.

I can see the why that would be disappointing in a game set in medieval Japan.
They could've mixed in some yokai/folkore inspired sets in there as well. Not just straight up Samurai armor 99% of the time.
Never need that in any game. ever. EVER. Especially not ones I play.
