I've already answered this many times in other posts but here it is yet again:

You access the co-op modes after reaching the world map (ie. beating the prologue and first actual mission) and then select "Torii Gate". You can also select individual missions in the world map and choose to "Become a Visitor" (but this is a bit redundant as you can do the same in Random Encounters).

First co-op mode is called "Yokai Realm with Companion"
- allows you to co-op the entire game with a friend on stages neither have visited yet (as well as ones you've already done).
- there is an Assist Gauge (like a life bar) that decreases with each death but if your partner is close he can summon you back quickly so you don't lose as much from that gauge.
- you lose if the Assist Gauge depletes or both of you die (one dies and the other dies before summoning that person back).
- both of you can interact with the stage, ie. open up chests, loot bodies, etc.
- the stages become more difficult for this co-op...more enemies, etc.
- you will gain less glory in this mode.
- if you fail to complete the stage you are required to start the stage from the beginning.
- the Shrines do not act as save points as they do in single player.
- shrines will slightly refill that Assist Gauge, replenish your elixers, sometime add bonuses, but will not respawn enemies.

Second co-op mode is "Random Encounters"
- allows you to be summoned into other peoples games who have an Ochoco cup placed at a Shrine.
- you have to have already completed the stage to be considered for being summoned.
- once summoned, everything seems just as difficult as it is for single player...doesn't appear to be any more challenging.
- you gain more glory in this mode.
- some stages do not have Shrines and thus can not be counted on for this type of co-op.
- only the host can interect with the stage (chests, open most short cuts, etc).
- if the host visits a Shrine, all normal enemies will respawn as normal.

Similarites between the two:

- a co-op defeat in either nets you some of the Amrita/Glory/Gold you earned while helping, not 100% of it.
- you can set a password (secret word) to co-op with friends in either setting.
- there is NO matchmaking by player level

AND I'll add that not all missions are capable of co-op. All main missions are (excluding The Queen's Eyes and The Man With The Guardian Spirit in NG+), but there are several 'side missions' that can not be co-op'd through using either method of co-op. The majority of these side missions, and Dojo missions for that matter, basically consist of a 1v1 format with some NPC.
