EDIT: Also, lightning will slow down the boss significantly if you have that Onmyo magic unlocked and land enough hits with it.
When he went for his spin attack I held block and moved away from him. Block works surprisingly well. That way it was just a question of being patient and not getting greedy.
...such fun
The weapon has a 'reaper' move that's basically just a constant combo as long as you got ki (or living weapon gauge).
All I did was ki break him, popped living weapon and chained him the rest of the way dead with living weapon + reaper combo. I melted more than 1/2 his bar away with one reaper combo, and my living weapon gauge was maintaining itself from the reaper combo hits. Without ANY gear to boost living weapon whatsoever. This could theoretically work on any boss, human or oni. Some bosses do got recovery attacks, but worse case scenario if they break out of it, you lose living weapon mode. But you'll have inflicted a massive amount of damage.
Hit em 2-3 times and dodge, try dodge that fcking swing
If you stay in front of him, for about ~50% of his health, all he does is the attack where he lifts his ball over his head and strikes the space in front of his arm, it is easy to see coming so just move a bit. Breaking his horns stuns him, but opens him up to using Yokai mist every so often. This is the easiest as he telegraphs these attacks pretty vividly. The only curveball you might have is that once in a blue moon, he'll do one arm then the other. Not too difficult either dodge left or right, dodging backwards from these attacks is likely to get you hurt.
Staying behind him will cause him to spin his balls in a circle, with him always tossing his right ball over his shoulder and facing that direction. Occasionally, he might just sweep with the right/left arm across his back to scare you away. This way is the most damaging, but the hardest too. Attacks from behind do a bit extra damage, but he is more likely to do these ball spins which means ki management is a huge factor.
At the lower ~50% range, it happened early or later for some deaths, the chains break and he is free to try and stomp you. Bait his 3 swipes and belly flop for a 2-3 hits in medium stance. Sometimes, if he is near one of his iron balls, he'll walk over to it and take aim. It tends to go in a straight line, but he has tracking so be quick on your feet dodging left or right. This move does keep him still for a few seconds during his aim, and a few seconds after he tosses the ball. Just rinse and repeat until he is dead. If you really want to spank him to death, at the ~35% mark just go "living weapon" and go ham. If he lives, he will have whatever status effect you gave him, so use it to your advantage.
A small tip, without his chains he does have a grab, as most bosses do. Don't hang too close to him or he might pick you up and throw you to the ground probably killing you.
There's no shame in admitting that I have died quite a lot to Onryoki. Heck, I died a lot to Nue. But continuing is all we can do.
save the living weapon thing until near the end for a quick finish.
My lessons learned:
- Go in with enough elixirs (I had 8)
- Stay in front of him - at the back he's too unpredictable
- During the second phase of the combat, when he throws balls at you: dodge! Easy but essential.
- Save living weapon for the big finale.
- Scream when he finally goes down!
Thx for your advice....on to the next pain in the neck ;)
His "Get away" chain swing CAN be blocked and I feel like the hitboxes aren't super accurate on it for dodging, so try that if you'd like.
Definitely kill stuff to build up your spirit gauge (Top left) so you can last resort before dying to it if needed.
For the chain part, stand in front of him only long enough till he starts some kind of grunting noise - then dodge to his side, hit him 1-3 times (depends on weapon and speed) and back away out of his chain retaliation.
When his chain breaks, right or left dodges are the key to not getting splatted - especially when he throws his iron ball at you. He is surprisingly difficult for a first boss, I will say >.<.
What can help is if you go into the Onmyo skills and get the one that says something about your guardian spirit attacking - that gives you 3 items per shrine, if you ready it at a shrine, that summons your spirit to do an attack. IT does some weak damage but if most or all hits go through it imparts a status on the enemy.
If you chose Kato : Enemy will take fire damage over time
Water one : Weaker DEF, so more DMG
Wind one : Weaker *attack* so he'll deal less damage each time he hits you while that lasts.
Hope this helps. Also if you can get 2 status effects on him at once, a third one is added, called "Discord" . IT's basically "No Ki" and he can be stunlocked until he recovers.
Also tried staying behind and blocking the swinging balls except one block drains all William's Ki and he pauses to catch breath.
When you aim for his head with a bow or rifle, do you aim for the horns or face?
